Checkpoint interception and seizure details

As reported by BusinessWorld Online, police stop the van-type truck at Barangay Nituan in Parang, Maguindanao del Norte after a brief chase on Monday. Personnel from the Police Regional Office-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region, with help from barangay and municipal officials, find 300 large boxes of Indonesian-made cigarettes stacked in the cargo deck.

The cigarettes, described as smuggled goods, have an estimated value of P17 million. The boxes are now under the custody of PRO-BAR and will be turned over to the Bureau of Customs for proper disposition.

Enforcement impact in the Bangsamoro region

Police Captain Steffi P. Salanguit, spokesperson of PRO-BAR, says the driver initially refuses to stop at an anti-smuggling checkpoint in the municipality. Officers eventually flag down the vehicle with the assistance of local officials.

Ms. Salanguit says the driver is now detained and faces prosecution over the foiled smuggling attempt and for allegedly showing disrespect to policemen at the checkpoint, whom he tries to ram while driving away. The operation underscores ongoing enforcement efforts against illicit tobacco distribution in BARMM markets.
