IBM stock tests $240 as OpenAI partnership supports recovery
IBM is recovering after its decline toward $230, while a new strategic partnership with OpenAI adds a strong fundamental catalyst. The stock returned to around $239 in premarket trading, making $240 the key level for extending the rebound.
IBM announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI aimed at accelerating the adoption of AI across enterprise operations. OpenAI frontier models, including GPT-5.6, as well as Codex and ChatGPT Work, will be integrated into IBM Consulting Advantage to support application modernization, workflow automation, and stronger cybersecurity.
IBM will also establish a dedicated OpenAI Practice, under which thousands of consultants and engineers will receive specialized training through the OpenAI Partner Network.

$240 becomes the key level for the next recovery attempt
IBM stock failed to hold above $240 and, as previously expected, returned to support near $230. In today’s premarket trading, however, buyers pushed the price back toward $239.
The key level during the regular session is $240. A decisive break and sustained move above this threshold would extend the recovery momentum and bring $244 back into focus as the nearest target.
A break above $244 would improve the short-term structure and open the way for further upside. The next medium-term target would then be the 50-day SMA near $255.70.
Move toward the 50-day SMA could confirm improving momentum
IBM’s recovery from the sharp post-earnings sell-off remains intact, while the OpenAI partnership adds fundamental support to the move. The current structure, however, still sits somewhere between a conventional technical rebound and the early stages of a more durable recovery.
A sustained move above $244 would provide the first more convincing signal in favor of the latter scenario, while an advance toward the 50-day SMA near $255.70 would strengthen that case further.
