NVDA stock slips toward $220 as bond yields challenge AI momentum
Nvidia slips toward $220 as Treasury yields pressure growth stocks.

Nvidia heads into the new trading session under pressure after pulling back from the area near key resistance at $230. Rising U.S. Treasury yields are adding another headwind for technology stocks.

Nvidia announced a major agreement with SB Energy involving the PORTS-Pike data center in Ohio, which will serve OpenAI. Nvidia will be the exclusive provider of AI computing infrastructure and will provide credit support for the initial 4.25 GW of capacity, with the project retaining the option to expand by another 3.75 GW. The company will also invest $1.5 billion in SB Energy.

The bond market, however, is becoming a more significant risk for NVDA. The 30-year U.S. Treasury yield stands at 5.31%, reaching that level for the first time since June 2007. For growth stocks, yields above 5% create stronger competition for capital, as investors can earn attractive returns on U.S. government bonds while taking considerably less risk. Higher rates also increase the discount rate applied to companies’ future cash flows.

As a result, some capital could shift from equities into Treasuries, a risk that is particularly relevant for highly valued AI stocks such as Nvidia.

Break below $220 could expose the $214–216.50 gap

Nvidia stock approached the resistance area around $230 discussed in the previous analysis but did not fully test the level. In premarket trading on August 18, the price slipped toward $220.79, making $220 the key support for today’s session.

A break and sustained move below $220 could accelerate the decline toward $214–216.50, where an unfilled gap from August 5 remains.

If buyers manage to defend $220, the stock could instead attempt another move toward $225.

For now, the base case remains a continuation of the correction, as Nvidia failed to fully test $230 and premarket trading has brought the price back toward key support.

August 26 earnings could sharply increase volatility

The main catalyst will be Nvidia’s quarterly earnings report on August 26. As the release approaches, NVDA volatility is likely to increase. Elevated market expectations also raise the bar not only for the results themselves but for guidance on future demand for AI infrastructure.

Even a strong report does not guarantee that the rally will continue. Short-term traders should therefore account for the risk of a sharp move in either direction, including a potential sell-the-news reaction after the results are released.
