Nvidia tests $212 as AI caution and Fed risk hit sentiment

The AI market is facing a new source of uncertainty as leaders of some of the industry’s largest labs call for a slower pace of technological development. For Nvidia, the debate is emerging at an especially sensitive moment ahead of the Fed decision.

An additional round of selling was unleashed after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei urged the industry to pause the rapid commercialization of cutting edge models over mounting safety concerns. Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman agreed with the core concept, with the latter adding that OpenAI will not go ahead with an IPO this year over safety.

The biggest risk for Nvidia is not that GPU demand will vanish overnight. But if the biggest AI companies pull back from scaling frontier models, investors may downgrade their outlooks for the speed at which AI infrastructure is built out and capital is spent.

Nvidia needs its 50 SMA to stop the selloff

The bearish setup from the previous analysis fully played out, with Nvidia shares falling into the $213–212 target area in premarket trading on September 14.

Since this move has largely been initiated by a fundamental news shock, it would be best to see stabilization confirmed first before going long.

The first signal would be the stock holding above the 50-day SMA around $212.60. The second would be the formation of a daily doji candle on elevated trading volume.

Such a combination could provide the first indication that selling pressure is beginning to ease and that the market is preparing for a technical rebound. Until confirmation appears, downside risk remains elevated.

If the area around the 50-day SMA fails to hold, the decline could accelerate toward the next support near $207, where an unfilled gap from August 4 is located.

Nvidia faces another volatility test as the Fed approaches

The meeting of the Federal Reserve on 15-16 September is another source of possible volatility. The rate decision will be announced on 16 September with a press conference, and the meeting will also feature new economic forecasts.

For Nvidia, then, it might not only be about the rate cut, which has largely already been priced into stocks, but about the Fed's guidance on the longer term path of policy. With AI stocks already lower in the premarket, yet another move in the Treasury yields could have disastrous consequences for NVDA.
