IonQ gains Bank of America buy rating as acquisitions support quantum roadmap
IonQ gets BofA buy rating

IonQ is drawing fresh Wall Street support as investors weigh how its recent deals could strengthen its position in quantum computing and adjacent markets. Bank of America says the company’s expansion into chip development, software and broader quantum applications could help accelerate product launches, even as commercial adoption remains at an early stage.

Highlights

  • IonQ received a Bank of America buy rating and $60 price target, driven by acquisitions like Sky Water Technology and Seed Innovations accelerating its quantum-compute roadmap.
  • Bank of America expects IonQ to launch its Superion 256 platform, integrating electronic qubit control, in Q2 2027 and forecasts a 69% sales CAGR from 2026–2030.
  • IonQ shares rose 16% in the past month but only 1.3% in 2026 versus 13% for the S&P 500, and execution risks remain around commercialization and system delivery.

Acquisitions shape product timeline

As reported by CNBC, Bank of America initiated coverage of IonQ on Monday with a buy rating and a $60 price objective, arguing that recent acquisitions could help the company bring more powerful quantum systems to market faster.

The bank’s thesis centers on IonQ using deals to accelerate its quantum-compute roadmap while expanding into networking, security, sensing, space and foundry services. IonQ, described as the largest public pure-play quantum company by revenue, acquired semiconductor foundry Sky Water Technology in July, a move that gives it control over chip development and manufacturing for its Superion systems. Its January acquisition of Seed Innovations, an AI and software development provider, is also expected to support the management and scaling of complex quantum workloads.

Bank of America says those transactions together should help IonQ speed the launch of its next-generation platform through a semiconductor-enabled path to higher qubit counts, broader customer engagement and exposure across quantum computing, communications and sensing. The broader range of applications could also help the company diversify and expand its revenue base.

Growth outlook faces execution risks

Quantum computing companies are still working through technical barriers, especially the error-prone nature of qubits used in certain calculations, and Bank of America says commercial adoption remains early. The bank expects more useful systems by 2030, while IonQ is aiming to launch its Superion 256 in the second quarter of 2027.

That system is expected to be the company’s first to integrate electronic qubit control, a change in architecture that could support substantial logical-qubit scaling. Bank of America also says the stock could benefit if IonQ meets engineering milestones in the second half of this year.

The shares are up 16% over the past month, but they have underperformed the broader market so far in 2026, rising 1.3% compared with a 13% gain for the S&P 500. Bank of America expects IonQ sales to grow at a 69% compound annual growth rate from fiscal 2026 to fiscal 2030, but it also warns that investors are paying for growth that has not yet been realized. Delays in machine deliveries or slower commercial adoption could threaten that forecast and the bank’s price target.
