Legal risk and tech gains shape sentiment before earnings release

Expedia Group is set to release its third quarter 2026 financial results for the period ended September 30, 2026, on November 4, 2026, through an earnings release and webcast on its investor relations site. The company faces a class action lawsuit alleging the use of hotel contracts and search algorithms to hinder hotels from offering lower prices elsewhere, which allegedly raised hotel rates on booking channels. Expedia was also recognized for a recent technology partnership with Vervotech and reported productivity gains after archiving 600,000 pages with the help of Atlassian engineers.

Anton Kharitonov, expert at Traders Union, views Expedia’s recent 5.04% rally as fragile given persistent resistance at key moving averages. He notes that negative momentum readings from MACD, ADX, and BBP highlight a lack of sustained buying conviction. Elevated legal risks from the class action lawsuit could undermine investor sentiment and weigh on fundamentals. Despite operational wins, medium-term selling pressure persists and oversold technical signals do not yet confirm a reversal. "Unless Expedia closes decisively above $271.95, I remain skeptical about any durable upside from here," Kharitonov says.
Viktoras Karapetjanc, expert at Traders Union, sees Expedia’s structural growth story as strong despite current volatility. He highlights the positive impact of technology partnerships and recent productivity gains as evidence of robust business execution. The bullish long-term alignment of the 50- and 200-day moving averages reinforces his constructive outlook. He believes that as underlying business fundamentals improve, the bullish structure remains intact and further growth is possible. "Expedia’s forward momentum and operational progress set the stage for new highs once resistance levels are cleared," Karapetjanc says.
Sholanke Dele, market strategist, is cautious about Expedia’s near-term prospects. He notes the current class action lawsuit adds headline risk and could undermine investor confidence. With selling pressure dominating technicals and volatility elevated, Dele sees a high probability of a downside move. "Without a meaningful shift in sentiment or legal clarity, I expect Expedia to struggle under resistance," Dele states.

Negative momentum persists despite technical support from long-term averages

Expedia is trading at $271.63, currently positioned just below the 20-day moving average (MA-20) at $271.95 and well below the 50-day moving average (MA-50) at $296.96, but above the 200-day moving average (MA-200) at $259.71. This setup signals lingering near-term resistance and medium-term pressure from sellers, though the long-term trend remains supported with a bullish MA-50 vs MA-200 alignment; immediate resistance is at $271.95 and support at today’s high of $271.21. Momentum analysis shows continued weakness: the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) and Average Directional Index (ADX) both indicate sell signals, reflecting negative momentum. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) and Commodity Channel Index (CCI) point to oversold conditions, with RSI at 34.46, and the Bull/Bear Power (BBP) at -5.81 signals sellers dominating intraday action, accompanied by an "Oversold" forecast. The session is marked by strong buying momentum toward highs, but momentum indicators contradict this move and underscore the risk of short-term exhaustion.

Earlier, analysts noted that investors may be misjudging the risk that AI-driven technologies like Meta's Muse pose to travel platforms such as Expedia, arguing that some market declines may be excessive given company-specific strengths and partnerships. The current trading setup highlights a high-probability downward bias for Expedia in the near term, with the key level to watch now at $262.56 for signs of renewed downside risk.
