West Pharmaceutical raises outlook as premium product mix lifts earnings
West Pharma boosts outlook

West Pharmaceutical Services is extending a recent rally after a strong third-quarter performance highlights growth drivers beyond demand tied to GLP-1 drugs. The company raises its full-year earnings guidance as higher-margin proprietary products and operating leverage support faster profit growth than revenue growth.

Highlights

  • West Pharmaceutical's Q3 adjusted EPS jumps 35.7% to $2.66 on sales of $874.5 million, beating estimates and prompting a full-year EPS guidance raise to $9.38-$9.48.
  • High-value proprietary components sales surge 20.3% year-over-year, now representing 53% of sales, with standard products comprising only 19% of the total.
  • Management projects nearly 300 basis points of operating margin expansion in 2023, with capital spending of $215-$220 million supporting robust cash generation.

Third-quarter performance and upgraded guidance

As reported by CNBC, West Pharmaceutical says third-quarter adjusted earnings per share rise 35.7% to $2.66 on sales of $874.5 million, up 8.7% from a year earlier, while the company also lifts its full-year adjusted EPS forecast to $9.38 to $9.48 from $8.85 to $9.05.

The results arrive as the stock reaches a 52-week high on Thursday. Analysts were looking for about $2.20 a share, according to FactSet, and shares are up more than 4% in afternoon trading after touching $438.27.

Demand linked to obesity and diabetes drugs remains a clear support for the business. Eli Lilly also reports strong third-quarter growth on Thursday, with revenue up 39% to $24.4 billion, driven by its diabetes and obesity franchises, while Mounjaro sales rise 65% to $10.7 billion and Zepbound increases 49% to $5.35 billion.

Product mix and margin expansion support broader thesis

West's latest figures also point to broader momentum across its injectable drug-delivery components business. Proprietary products sales grow 12.6% to $728.8 million, ahead of 2.9% growth in contract-manufactured products, while standard products account for just 19% of total sales.

Within proprietary products, sales of high-value components increase 20.3% from the same quarter last year and now make up 53% of sales. CFO Robert McMahon says growth outside the GLP-1 business is in the high teens, adding that customers have launched more than 200 high-value product upgrade projects this year and that some regulatory changes should provide a multi-year tailwind.

Profitability is improving faster than revenue, with adjusted EPS growth of nearly 36% outpacing roughly 12% organic sales growth. Management expects operating margins to expand by nearly 300 basis points this year, while capital spending of $215 million to $220 million remains in line with its long-term target of 6% to 8% of revenue, supporting cash generation alongside earnings growth.

In our earlier coverage of the S&P 500’s push toward 8,000, we noted that markets were entering a critical third-quarter earnings test after a midsummer rally led by AI-focused megacaps. The piece highlighted how higher oil prices, elevated Treasury yields and political uncertainty were raising the bar for results, while weakening market breadth and concentration risk left indexes more vulnerable to disappointment.
