Economics, Policy, and Finance by Mark Carney
Mark J. Carney is an economist and statesman who served as Governor of the Bank of Canada (2008–2013) and Governor of the Bank of England (2013–2020) before becoming Prime Minister of Canada in 2025. He is the first person to have led the central banks of two different G7 nations, steering both through periods of financial turbulence. Carney’s tenure in central banking was marked by innovations such as forward guidance and a focus on climate-related financial risk.
Born in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, in 1965, Carney grew up in Edmonton and earned economics degrees from Harvard University and the University of Oxford. He spent over a decade at Goldman Sachs in London, Tokyo, New York, and Toronto before joining the Bank of Canada as Deputy Governor. His leadership during the 2008 financial crisis helped Canada avoid the worst of the global downturn. After leaving the Bank of England, Carney became UN Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance, advocating for sustainable investment. His transition into electoral politics brought his financial expertise directly into Canada’s policymaking at the highest level.
