Dallas Mavericks ownership turned from sport to valuation play for Mark Cuban
Years after transforming the Dallas Mavericks from a struggling NBA team into a championship-winning franchise, Mark Cuban says the experience stopped feeling enjoyable as financial valuations became the dominant focus. The shift, he says, added stress even as the team’s value climbed sharply and his eventual exit delivered a multibillion-dollar return.
Highlights
- Cuban bought the Dallas Mavericks for about $285 million in 2000 and sold his stake for $3.5 billion in 2024; he cites earning $4.3 billion from the deal.
- Forbes reports the Mavericks rose from the NBA's eighth lowest-valued team in 2000 to the seventh most valuable in 2023, staying above league average from 2003 to 2024.
- Cuban attributes the franchise’s valuation gains to integrating technology and analytics, an NBA championship, and strengthening the team’s brand as a financial asset.
From franchise turnaround to multibillion-dollar exit
As reported by Fortune, Cuban said in an interview on The Diary of a CEO on Monday that owning the Mavericks was initially driven by passion for basketball, but later became centered on franchise valuations. He said that change made the role more stressful and less fun than when he first bought the team.Cuban bought the Mavericks for about $285 million in 2000 and sold his stake for $3.5 billion in 2024, according to ESPN senior NBA insider Shams Charania. Cuban, however, said the amount he made from the deal was $4.3 billion.
He acquired the team from H. Ross Perot Jr. after a difficult period for the franchise and went on to oversee more than two decades of change in its on-court results and business standing. Before owning the Mavericks, Cuban built his fortune through the sale of internet radio company Broadcast.com to Yahoo in 1999 for about $5.7 billion in stock.
Valuation gains reflect broader sports business shift
The Mavericks won an NBA championship under Cuban and developed a reputation for using technology and analytics to improve performance. Cuban said the championship helped embed the team more deeply in the city, describing how he took the trophy to schools, bars, restaurants and his children's events. That success also strengthened the franchise as an entertainment brand and a financial asset. According to Forbes, the Mavericks moved from the eighth lowest-valued NBA team in 2000 to the seventh most valuable in 2023, staying above the league average franchise valuation between 2003 and 2024.
Our earlier article on India’s disinvestment programme explained that most proceeds since FY2016 have come from market-linked routes such as ETFs, public issues and buybacks, while strategic sales transferring management control have played a relatively small role. It also highlighted how the planned IDBI Bank stake sale could materially lift annual collections and potentially help the government exceed its target after years of shortfalls.
