Interactive Brokers has taken a significant step in strengthening its presence in prediction markets by appointing Dr. Philip Tetlock to the Board of Directors of ForecastEx, its wholly owned subsidiary. Dr. Tetlock is widely recognized for his academic and practical contributions to forecasting, probability-based judgment, and decision-making under uncertainty—fields that closely align with the mechanics of prediction markets. His appointment is expected to enhance ForecastEx’s institutional credibility as it develops tools that allow investors to trade on the probabilities of future events.
Strengthening governance and market integrity
ForecastEx operates as a CFTC-registered Designated Contract Market (DCM) and Derivative Clearing Organization (DCO), enabling it to list and clear forecast contracts within a regulated framework. By adding Dr. Tetlock to its board, Interactive Brokers aims to reinforce ForecastEx’s governance structure and deepen its subject-matter expertise in areas such as market integrity, risk management, and outcome resolution.
Thomas Peterffy, Founder and Chairman of Interactive Brokers, said the company looks forward to leveraging Dr. Tetlock’s expertise to enhance the platform and empower investors to trade future probabilities more effectively. Prediction markets, he noted, aggregate consensus views on uncertainty, helping market participants inform business, societal, and investment decisions while managing portfolio risk.
Forecast contracts and broader applications
Forecast contracts offered through ForecastEx allow individuals and organizations to hedge or express views on risks tied to macroeconomic performance, climate-related developments, and other measurable events or benchmarks. These contracts also provide the potential for monthly returns on invested capital, distinguishing them from traditional derivatives and spot-market instruments.
Dr. Tetlock brings decades of academic leadership to the role. He is the Leonore Annenberg University Professor of Democracy and Citizenship at the University of Pennsylvania, with joint appointments at the Wharton School and the School of Arts & Sciences. He is also the author of several influential books, including Superforecasting: The Art and Science of Prediction.

As prediction markets continue to gain relevance as tools for risk management and information aggregation, the appointment signals Interactive Brokers’ intent to position ForecastEx as a globally credible venue for probability-based trading.
