Weather disruptions and rising stocks cap cocoa price recovery

Severe droughts in West Africa, India, and other regions, combined with excessive rainfall in southern South America, have threatened major cocoa crops and contributed to a 5% to 8% increase in global food commodity prices, according to Mpelembe. These weather disruptions are compounding concerns over reduced cocoa supplies, which have been amplified by volatile December cocoa trading in response to dry conditions in West Africa, as reported by Admisi. Despite these supply-side threats, rising warehouse stockpiles on the ICE exchange have capped price gains, and cocoa prices have come under additional pressure as inventories reached a two-and-a-half-year high. Ghana’s COCOBOD has also cut its cocoa production estimate for the 2026/27 season by 100,000 tonnes, citing aging farms, crop diseases, and adverse climate conditions, Ghanaweb reported.

Sell momentum prevails as CC tests technical resistance

On the H4 timeframe, CC remains below the MA-20 at $5,719 and MA-50 at $5,745, while still holding above the daily MA-200 at $4,622. Immediate resistance is located at the Ichimoku Kijun level of $5,710, with key support lying near $5,391. Momentum signals are negative across the board: MACD and ADX indicate ongoing sell pressure, RSI reads 39.13 (sell), Stoch RSI is in oversold territory, and CCI also flashes a sell. Bull/Bear Power is oversold, supporting the dominance of sellers intraday, while the Awesome Oscillator offers a neutral signal. No conflicting signals are present among major oscillators or momentum readings.

Range-bound trading likely as downside risks intensify

Over the next two to three trading days, CC is likely to consolidate within a volatility band between $5,391 and $5,704. The chances of a substantial upward move are low, while further downside is strongly favored. Baseline scenario expects continued range-bound action; a clear break above $5,710 could shift sentiment to the upside, while a fall below $5,391 would reinforce downside momentum.

Anton Kharitonov, expert at Traders Union, sees the cocoa market under pressure from high warehouse stocks despite ongoing supply risks from weather events and production cuts. Technical indicators are firmly bearish, with CC trading below short-term moving averages and no bullish signals from momentum tools. He believes price is likely to remain range-bound between $5,391 and $5,704, with risks skewed to further downside. "Given the prevailing negative momentum and oversupply, I remain cautious and would not consider upside scenarios until $5,710 is reclaimed."

Earlier, analysts noted that cocoa faced persistent near-term selling pressure, with corporate consolidation providing some market stability. The current analysis strengthens this view as adverse weather and supply concerns continue to weigh on prices, making a break below $5,391 a critical downside risk to monitor in the coming sessions.
