Highlights

  • Speculative investors sharply reduced net long corn futures positions in the week to October 27, indicating waning short-term demand.
  • This pullback has increased downside liquidity and is likely to limit the potential for near-term corn price rebounds.
  • Corn futures trade in a sideways pattern between USX447.35 to USX451.85, with technical indicators showing low momentum and a high probability of further declines.

Speculative sell-off intensifies as net longs decline sharply

Recent COT data for the week to October 27 revealed that speculative investors executed substantial net sales in corn futures, with the combined net long position showing one of the largest reductions among major agricultural contracts, according to Home. This shift in positioning signals that short-term speculative demand has receded, leading to a heavier sell-side bias in the futures market. Such a reduction in net long commitments often contributes to increased downside liquidity and may temper price rebounds as traders reassess risk exposure.

Seller control persists as muted momentum meets technical resistance

Technically, ZC is trading above the MA-20 at USX449.18 but remains below both the MA-50 at USX450.27 and well under the MA-200 at USX471.14. The Ichimoku Kijun at USX449.45 currently offers immediate support for short-term price action. Momentum readings are muted: both MACD and ADX are neutral, while RSI shows a Sell bias at 46.44, and Stochastic RSI, CCI, and Awesome Oscillator all register neutral signals. Bull/Bear Power continues to indicate an oversold state, suggesting seller dominance in sessions with generally low volatility and a minor negative gap.

Downside risks dominate as range-bound outlook prevails

Looking ahead over the next two to three sessions, ZC is expected to trade within a typical volatility band of USX447.35 to USX451.85. Current market signals assign a very high probability to a downward move and a very low probability of a sustained rise. The baseline scenario anticipates sideways movement in the stated range, with a downside scenario triggered if support is broken and a bullish scenario only opening up if resistance is decisively breached.

Viktoras Karapetjanc, expert at Traders Union, sees the sharp reduction in speculative net longs as a clear sign of weaker risk appetite in corn futures. He notes that while technical levels provide some short-term support, sentiment and positioning data suggest limited upside in the near term. Karapetjanc believes sideways to mildly lower action is most likely until confidence returns. "Momentum could shift quickly if buyers step in above USX451.85, but for now the path of least resistance remains sideways to down."

Earlier, analysts noted that China’s subdued demand for U.S. corn was due in part to strong domestic supplies and increased competition from other exporters. The latest positioning data and technical signals now underscore downside risk for corn futures, with the key threshold to watch being the immediate support at the Ichimoku Kijun level—any decisive break could trigger a further bearish move.
