Nvidia expands AI influence with $99 billion investment portfolio
Nvidia equity investments surge to $99 billion

Nvidia has rapidly transformed itself from a supplier of AI chips into one of the technology industry’s largest strategic investors. Its equity portfolio reached $99 billion by late July, more than 10 times its value a year earlier, as the company deploys its growing financial resources across AI models, cloud infrastructure, networking, and semiconductor technology.

Highlights

  • Nvidia equity holdings reached $99 billion.
  • Investments topped $40 billion in 2026.
  • Nearly $50 billion went to frontier AI labs.
  • Nvidia is financing more of the AI ecosystem.

Nvidia has committed more than $40 billion to investments in 2026, while the value of its equity holdings climbed from roughly $7 billion a year ago and $2.2 billion two years ago, CNBC reported. The scale now puts Nvidia close to Alphabet and Amazon, whose equity investments each exceed $100 billion.

Capital becomes part of Nvidia's strategy

The investment push stretches across much of the infrastructure needed to build and operate artificial intelligence systems. Frontier AI developers have been among the largest beneficiaries, with Nvidia investing nearly $50 billion in such companies.

OpenAI alone received a $30 billion commitment from Nvidia as part of its $110 billion funding round in February. Nvidia has also backed specialized cloud providers that purchase its GPUs and rent computing capacity to customers. It invested $2 billion in CoreWeave in January, while Nebius secured another $2 billion investment in March.

The company has moved into technologies supporting AI infrastructure as well. Since March, Nvidia has committed at least $6.5 billion to photonics and optical technology companies, including $2 billion each for Lumentum, Coherent, and Marvell.

Investments reinforce the core chip business

The strategy gives Nvidia a financial interest in companies that are also major buyers or potential users of its hardware. Funding cloud providers and AI developers can strengthen their ability to build data centers and purchase large quantities of Nvidia GPUs.

That matters as Nvidia remains heavily dependent on the biggest cloud companies. Hyperscale customers generated $48.7 billion of the company’s $96.2 billion in fiscal second-quarter revenue.

Some investments have also produced substantial gains. Nvidia’s $5 billion Intel stake was valued at $30 billion, while its SpaceX holding reached $21 billion as of June.

Nvidia gains influence across the AI supply chain

The expansion of Nvidia’s investment portfolio shows how the company is using profits from the AI boom to strengthen its position beyond semiconductor sales. Its fiscal second-quarter revenue jumped 106% to $96.2 billion, while the shares gained 33% over the past 12 months.

Investments in AI laboratories, cloud providers, chipmakers, and optical-networking companies can support future GPU demand while reducing vulnerabilities across Nvidia’s supply chain. With $99 billion already invested in equities, capital deployment is becoming an increasingly important part of how Nvidia competes across the wider AI market.
