Backblaze drive failures rise sharply

Backblaze reported that its drive failure rate for the quarter increased to 1.73 percent, up from 1.24 percent in the previous period.

According to the company, the rise is attributed mainly to drives that are over seven years old, as well as to certain Seagate models with relatively small populations. However, the newer 20TB and larger drives, which make up the bulk of new deployments, were not responsible for the increase. The update highlights the impact of aging hardware and product-specific vulnerabilities on operational reliability.
