Backblaze notes spike in quarterly AFR while lifetime AFR remains stable
Backblaze quarterly AFR at 1.73 percent

Backblaze reported that its quarterly Annualized Failure Rate (AFR) increased to 1.73 percent, while the lifetime AFR moved up by 0.02 points.

The company emphasized that although the quarterly metric saw a notable jump, the longer-term lifetime AFR is the more reliable indicator for its hard drive reliability, attributing the difference to typical fluctuations between quarters using the same drives.

Backblaze previously reported that most drive failures were linked to older units and certain Seagate models as its failure rate rose to 1.73 percent earlier this year. The company has also focused on improvements in deployment, enabling silent install for its Computer Backup service to streamline management for Mac administrators using services like Jamf and Kandji. Both developments come as Backblaze continues to track metrics for drive reliability.
