Cloudflare pushes build-and-sell roles as AI reshapes cybersecurity jobs
Artificial intelligence is changing hiring, job design and career paths across cybersecurity as companies automate more routine work. Cloudflare says workers who can both build products and help sell them are likely to be best positioned as AI takes over a larger share of operational tasks.
Highlights
- Cloudflare reorganized its workforce after a 20% staff cut in May, emphasizing product-building and customer-relationship roles as AI removes function redundancies.
- Michelle Zatlyn projects AI will handle up to 95% of cybersecurity work within five years, as Cloudflare detects 234 billion daily cyberthreats and automates security tasks.
- Cloudflare plans its largest-ever intern program for 2026 with 1,100 hires, prioritizing talent able to prototype, launch, and directly advance business outcomes amid broader tech industry shifts.
Cloudflare’s workforce shift and AI outlook
As reported by CNBC, Cloudflare co-founder, president and chief operating officer Michelle Zatlyn says the company is reorganizing around roles that create products and maintain customer relationships as AI removes redundancies across functions. She says that shift is already visible inside Cloudflare after the company cut about 20% of its workforce last May, with reductions in areas including finance, marketing, recruiting and revenue operations.Cloudflare, which says it detects 234 billion cyberthreats a day, is applying the same logic to its core security business. Zatlyn says the threat environment is becoming noisier in the near term, but she expects AI to handle as much as 95% of cybersecurity work within five years, with software becoming more secure by design over time.
She describes the company’s internal rethink as a reassessment of the workplace “factory floor” for the AI era. In that model, employees who can build, ship and connect technical work to business outcomes are gaining importance, while more routine support functions are becoming easier to consolidate.
Intern hiring and broader industry implications
Cloudflare is still investing in talent even as it reduces some roles elsewhere. Zatlyn says the company’s 2026 intern program is expected to reach about 1,100 people, roughly a quarter of the company’s under-5,000 workforce, making it the largest intern cohort in the company’s history. The program is being used to reinforce what Zatlyn calls a builder-and-seller mindset, with emphasis on employees who can prototype, launch and contribute directly rather than only manage processes. She also points to growing demand for workers who serve as connective tissue between technical and commercial teams.
That view aligns with wider changes across the technology sector, where engineering and sales functions are increasingly overlapping. Companies including AWS, Anthropic and OpenAI are using roles such as forward deployed engineers, reflecting a broader industry move toward employees who can combine technical execution with customer-facing work as AI reshapes software development and cybersecurity careers.
Our earlier article on Cohere’s planned acquisition of AI cybersecurity startup AISLE detailed how the deal would add AI-driven software vulnerability detection to Cohere’s broader AI business as it expands in Europe through a Prague engineering hub. We also noted AISLE’s early research results, including the discovery of hundreds of new software bugs and multiple OpenSSL vulnerabilities, underscoring how AI tools are increasingly central to modern threat detection and defense.
