Apple iPhone 18 Pro sales rise in early global launch, led by China
IPhone 18 Pro surges

Early demand for Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro lineup is running ahead of the prior generation in the first weeks after launch. The gain is driven largely by strong momentum in China and India, while sales are weaker in other major markets including the U.S. and Japan.

Highlights

  • Counterpoint Research reports global iPhone 18 Pro series sales up 3.1% year-over-year in first three weeks post-launch, led by China and India.
  • China sales for the iPhone 18 Pro series surge 29% year-over-year, driven by greater early stock and higher prices for rival Android flagships.
  • Sales decline 4% in the U.S. and 27% in Japan, as higher prices and muted feature upgrades dampen demand, with exchange rates worsening impacts in Japan.

Early sales trends across key markets

As reported by Reuters, citing Counterpoint Research, global sales of Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro series in the first three weeks after launch are 3.1% higher than sales of the iPhone 17 Pro series over the same period a year earlier.

The research firm says the smartphones are performing well in markets such as China and India, but more modestly elsewhere, pointing to a mixed start for the new premium lineup.

China posts the strongest growth among tracked markets, with sales rising 29% from a year earlier. Counterpoint says early stock of the iPhone 18 Pro series is higher than it was for last year’s 17 Pro phones, while price increases on rival flagship Android models from Chinese manufacturers are also supporting demand.

Pricing pressure in the U.S. and Japan

Outside China, global sales growth is far weaker, according to Counterpoint’s analysis.

Sales in the U.S. and Japan fall 4% and 27%, respectively, from a year earlier, with the new models priced above their predecessors. Counterpoint says U.S. consumers see few meaningful improvements in features or design to justify the higher price, while in Japan exchange rates amplify the price increases and weigh on demand.

Within the iPhone 18 Pro series, the iPhone 18 Pro Max accounts for 56% of sales, slightly below 57% a year earlier.

In our earlier article on the AI-linked tech selloff, we covered how hotter-than-expected U.S. inflation data revived fears of further Federal Reserve rate hikes and triggered sharp declines in Nasdaq and S&P 500-linked tech names. We also noted that investors were reassessing the cost of financing large-scale AI infrastructure, as higher borrowing costs put pressure on heavily leveraged companies and weighed on broader risk appetite.
