Backblaze announced that more than a quarter of its drive fleet now consists of 20TB or larger drives.
The company noted that manufacturers are actively developing 40TB drives and projecting 100TB models by 2029, which will necessitate changes in how drives physically write data and could affect reliability reporting practices. Backblaze explores the implications of these advances in a new post.

Backblaze previously reported a 9.33 percent failure rate for its 10TB Seagate drives, with 22 failures out of 965 units this quarter, detailed in a recent post. The company has also facilitated large-scale data operations, as Lukka moved nearly 3PB of blockchain data to Backblaze B2 for shared AWS and on-premises compute, according to company disclosures. These updates reflect ongoing changes in Backblaze’s storage capabilities and service applications.
