BCIC ratings stay under review as Jamaica insurer merger awaits approval
BCIC ratings under review

Jamaica-based British Caribbean Insurance Company Limited remains under review as its planned combination with JN General Insurance Company moves toward regulatory approval. The status also reflects uncertainty around Hurricane Melissa claims, reinsurance recoverables and the capital position of the combined insurance organization.

Highlights

  • AM Best keeps BCIC ratings under review with developing implications as the BCIC-JNGI merger awaits completion and regulatory approval.
  • BCIC ratings remain supported by a very strong balance sheet and strong operating performance but reflect concerns over Hurricane Melissa claims and reinsurance recoverables.
  • The amalgamation, initiated after BCIC's August 14, 2025 acquisition of JNGI, is projected to complete between late second-half 2026 and early 2027, pending strategic and capital assessments.

Merger review and rating factors

As reported by AM Best, the ratings of British Caribbean Insurance Company Limited, or BCIC, remain under review with developing implications while the insurer awaits completion of its amalgamation with JN General Insurance Company, or JNGI, into a single legal entity.

AM Best says the current ratings reflect BCIC's very strong balance sheet strength, strong operating performance, limited business profile and appropriate enterprise risk management. The rating agency says BCIC and JNGI are still operating independently under common ownership until the consolidation is completed.

BCIC's ratings were first placed under review on Aug. 14, 2025, after BCIC completed the acquisition of JNGI. The review is set to continue until the amalgamation is finalized and AM Best can assess financial statements for the combined organization.

Claims exposure and strategic implications

The review also centers on the effect of Hurricane Melissa claims and related reinsurance recoverables on BCIC's stand-alone balance sheet strength, as well as the impact of JNGI's risk-adjusted capital position on the broader organization. AM Best says it will continue to evaluate claims resolution, reinsurance collections and capitalization as the process moves forward.

The amalgamation is still pending regulatory approval and is expected to be completed in late second-half 2026 into early 2027. AM Best also says discussions with management over the business strategy for the combined organization are ongoing, pointing to further assessment of how the merged insurer will be positioned in Jamaica's insurance market.

In our earlier coverage of sovereign resilience in a higher-rate environment, we noted that prolonged geopolitical tensions and elevated fiscal spending are increasing borrowing risks as global funding costs stay high. We also highlighted that emerging and frontier markets are especially exposed because interest-service burdens tend to be heavier relative to government revenues, while persistent shocks like energy and food price spikes can further strain credit outlooks.
