NSE International Exchange extends trading hours to support global investor access
NSE expands trading hours

India's NSE International Exchange has expanded its trading day to 23 and a half hours as GIFT City steps up efforts to attract more overseas market activity. The longer schedule took effect on November 2 and gives participants access across Asian, European and U.S. market hours.

Highlights

  • NSE International Exchange extended trading hours to 23 hours and 30 minutes, operating from 3:15 a.m. IST to 2:45 a.m. the next day.
  • The longer session aims to attract overseas investors and leverages technology to keep system maintenance under three minutes between sessions and under 15 minutes daily.
  • The expansion aligns with efforts to establish GIFT City as India's international financial hub and follows the National Stock Exchange of India's recent high-profile public listing.

Extended schedule and operating setup

As reported by Reuters, the exchange said on Tuesday that trading now runs from 3:15 a.m. IST to 2:45 a.m. the following day, taking total market operations to 23 hours and 30 minutes.

NSE International Exchange said the change is aimed at broadening access for overseas investors and improving flexibility for participants operating across multiple time zones. Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer V. Balasubramaniam said the extended access strengthens GIFT City's connectivity with global financial markets.

The exchange added that the longer session depends on technology designed to keep downtime brief. Its systems, it said, can complete maintenance within three minutes between sessions and in less than 15 minutes at the end of the day.

Push to build GIFT City as a finance hub

NSE International Exchange was set up in 2017 in Gujarat International Finance Tec-City, or GIFT City, and is regulated by the International Financial Services Centres Authority. It offers products including stock, index and currency derivatives, depository receipts and global stocks.

The move forms part of a broader effort to position GIFT City as India's international financial hub. The exchange also said it will continue expanding international access and market infrastructure as it responds to demand from global participants.

The extended trading schedule comes more than a month after the market debut of the National Stock Exchange of India, which ended a decade-long listing effort and made it one of the world's 10 most valuable publicly traded bourses.

Our earlier article on India’s September merchandise trade deficit explained that the gap widened to $30.21 billion as imports rose faster than exports. We noted that elevated crude prices and geopolitical disruptions were lifting the import bill, while India pursued export-market diversification through new and advancing trade agreements.
