Ethereum’s Pectra upgrade will go live on the Holesky testnet today at 9:55 pm UTC, allowing developers to trial new features before they are deployed on the mainnet.
The Ethereum Foundation announced that the upgrade will activate at epoch 115,968 on Holesky, with a subsequent rollout on Sepolia scheduled for March 5 at epoch 222,464 at 7:29 am UTC.
- Testnet Activation: Pectra will debut on Holesky at 9:55 pm UTC, marking a critical phase in its development cycle.
- Account Abstraction: The upgrade introduces EIP-3074, enabling externally owned accounts to execute batch transactions and benefit from gas sponsorship.
- Enhanced Capacity: Pectra will boost Ethereum’s blob capacity by 50%, increasing the average blobs per block from three to six.
- Validator Improvements: A new proposal will extend the maximum balance for validator rewards from 32 ETH to 2,048 ETH, incentivizing network participation.
Pectra is a major step toward achieving full account abstraction on Ethereum. One notable enhancement, EIP-3074, allows for batch transactions and sponsored gas payments—features that can let users transact even without holding Ether.
These improvements are expected to not only simplify user experience but also enhance security and recovery mechanisms for EOAs. Additionally, the upgrade significantly improves layer-2 scaling by increasing Ethereum’s blob capacity, a key metric for efficient data storage and cheaper transactions on rollup networks.
The deployment of Pectra on testnets follows a recent decision by core Ethereum developers to expedite protocol upgrades. At a recent “All Core Devs” meeting, leaders emphasized a more aggressive approach to development, with less debate over scope and faster implementation of new features.

This shift in strategy is designed to maintain Ethereum’s competitive edge amid evolving blockchain technologies.
With Pectra set for testnet activation and a clear roadmap to mainnet deployment, Ethereum is positioning itself for enhanced network efficiency and broader adoption. If the testnet proves successful, we can expect robust performance improvements and further upgrades in the near future.
Recently we wrote, that Ethereum Foundation lead developer Tim Beiko has dismissed calls for a blockchain rollback after the recent Bybit hack, calling the idea impractical and unfeasible.
