Lugano expands citywide crypto payments through growing Plan ₿ initiative
The Swiss city of Lugano is expanding its cryptocurrency payment options through the “Plan ₿” initiative, integrating crypto payments for various city services and utility bills for local residents.
The “Plan ₿” project was launched in Lugano in 2022 in partnership with stablecoin issuer Tether. The initiative from Tether and the Bitcoin community integrated BTC and USDT payments into everyday financial operations such as taxes and municipal fees.
Today, more than 350 merchants have joined the project, making crypto transactions more accessible and positioning Lugano as a leading technological hub on the European and global map.
This was further highlighted by the “Plan ₿ Forum,” which this year gathered 4,000 participants from 64 countries.
From festive forums to mass cryptocurrency adoption
Key figures and industry leaders highly praised the initiative. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino welcomed the “bold application of technology that can improve society.”
“Our goal is to make Lugano a center of technological and financial innovation. The success of the Forum confirms we are on the right path,” said Lugano Mayor Michele Foletti.
Since Lugano began hosting Bitcoin forums in 2022, attendance has grown by 140%, strengthening the city’s significance in the global crypto community.
Such initiatives highlight the movement toward mass cryptocurrency adoption, potentially transforming financial transactions and attracting global technological investment to participating regions.
