Bithumb identifies $200 million in crypto held across 2.6 million inactive accounts
South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb said more than $200 million in customer assets remain dormant across approximately 2.6 million inactive accounts, according to data released as part of its latest dormant account asset recovery campaign.
Bithumb said the affected accounts belong to users who have not logged in or traded for more than one year. In total, dormant balances amount to around 291.6 billion Korean won, or roughly $201.8 million. Some accounts have remained inactive for over a decade.
The exchange noted that the largest dormant balance it identified was valued at approximately $2.84 million. The longest recorded period of inactivity reached 4,380 days, or nearly 12 years.
The exchange has conducted similar asset recovery efforts in previous years. During its 11th anniversary campaign, Bithumb said approximately 36,000 users reclaimed dormant crypto worth about $50 million.
Bithumb said the current campaign is part of its customer protection efforts and that eligible users will be contacted directly with instructions on how to recover their accounts.
Market participants note that dormant exchange balances represent potential latent supply that could re-enter the market over time, particularly during periods of renewed retail participation. The disclosure also highlights ongoing challenges for centralized exchanges in managing long-inactive accounts and unclaimed customer funds.
Bithumb said several of the inactive assets have seen significant price appreciation during that time. According to the exchange, some dormant holdings have generated returns exceeding 61,000%, reflecting positions taken during the earliest phases of the crypto market.
For comparison, CoinGecko data shows Bitcoin was trading near $767 on Jan. 1, 2014. As of early January 2026, BTC was priced around $87,700, representing a gain of roughly 11,300%. Some dormant assets on Bithumb outperformed Bitcoin over the same period.
