Ethereum Foundation donates $1.25 million to defend Tornado Cash creator
The Ethereum Foundation has donated $1.25 million to support the legal defense of Alexey Pertsev, a developer for Tornado Cash, who is preparing to appeal his money laundering conviction in the Netherlands.

In a post on X on February 26, the Ethereum Foundation declared its support for Pertsev, stating, “Privacy is normal, and writing code is not a crime.” Pertsev, a Russian national residing in the Netherlands, was convicted by a Dutch court in May 2024 for money laundering related to his work at Tornado Cash and sentenced to five years and four months in prison.
He was recently released from custody on pretrial release earlier this month, a development that has reinvigorated efforts to challenge his conviction. In response to the donation, Pertsev expressed his gratitude on X, saying, “I’m very grateful that I can now completely focus on preparing my appeal. This means the world to me.”
