Highlights

  • Optimism governance approved a pilot program to buy back OP tokens using 50% of net Superchain sequencer revenue, starting February, directly linking token value to network activity.
  • Purchased OP tokens will be held in the Optimism Collective treasury, with the remaining revenue directed toward grants and ecosystem development initiatives.
  • OP trades at $0.2646—well below all key moving averages—with persistent seller control; key support is $0.2835, and resistance is $0.3275, as technicals indicate sustained bearish momentum.

Token buyback as protocol links value to Superchain revenue

Optimism's governance has approved a pilot buyback program, allocating 50% of net Superchain sequencer revenue to recurring OP token purchases starting in February. The acquired tokens will be held in the Optimism Collective treasury, while remaining revenue supports grants and ecosystem development. This marks the first direct connection between the OP token's value and Superchain activity, establishing a new framework for tokenomics within the network.

Anton Kharitonov, expert at Traders Union, highlights sustained bearish momentum for Optimism (OP). He notes that the price sits well below its moving averages and all technical signals remain negative, with no sign of reversal. News of the buyback has failed to spark demand or halt the decline, suggesting weak sentiment among market participants. Kharitonov sees additional downside risk if support breaks, especially since volatility levels are still in line with selling pressure. "Until clear reversal signals emerge and buying interest returns, OP remains vulnerable to fresh lows," Kharitonov warns.

Viktoras Karapetjanc, expert at Traders Union, views the governance-approved buyback as a strategic shift for Optimism's tokenomics. He believes this initiative strengthens the link between Superchain growth and OP value, laying groundwork for longer-term adoption. While current price action remains muted, Karapetjanc sees potential for renewed investor interest as the program matures. "With deeper integration of tokenomics and ecosystem incentives, OP's bullish structure could reassert itself in upcoming cycles," says Karapetjanc.

Jainam Mehta, market strategist, points to persistent overhead resistance and lackluster momentum in OP. He observes that both trend and momentum indicators point to continued sideways movement, with a breakout above $0.3275 needed to shift sentiment. Mehta suggests the absence of oversold conditions means further declines are possible if support fails. "A decisive move above the Ichimoku Kijun could offer tactical upside, but I'm watching for contrarian buy signals only if volatility spikes," Mehta advises.

Persisting bearish momentum as indicators show weak trend strength

Momentum remains broadly bearish for OP, with confirmation from both the MACD and ADX indicating weak trend strength. The RSI stands at 46.9, Stoch RSI at 33.4, and CCI at –76.5, all pointing to a downtrending market that is not yet oversold. BBP readings highlight sustained selling pressure, and the negative Awesome Oscillator aligns with the prevailing downtrend. The closest dynamic resistance is seen at the Ichimoku Kijun level of $0.3275, with no major moving average cross signals present.

Previously it was reported that Optimism remains under persistent downside pressure, trading below major moving averages with technical indicators such as MACD, ADX, and the Awesome Oscillator confirming sustained bearish momentum. Immediate resistance is noted near $0.2950–$0.3275, while support is seen around $0.2650–$0.2828, and no major indicator signals a reversal as OP remains at high risk of further declines.
