Natural gas weakens near major support as supply outlook outweighs geopolitical risks
NATGAS

Natural gas remains under pressure as strong U.S. production and healthy storage levels continue to outweigh weather-related demand. Despite elevated power consumption during the summer cooling season, storage injections have remained resilient, while growing contributions from renewable generation have reduced gas demand for electricity.

This combination has kept Henry Hub prices under pressure.

At the same time, the medium-term fundamental backdrop remains constructive. The U.S. Energy Information Administration still expects LNG exports to continue expanding through 2026 and 2027 as new export facilities ramp up operations, supporting long-term gas demand.

Middle East remains a key source of uncertainty

Although the recent easing in U.S.-Iran tensions has reduced some of the geopolitical risk premium in energy markets, the conflict in the Middle East continues to influence global natural gas pricing. Europe is still rebuilding inventories from relatively low levels, while LNG supply chains remain vulnerable to disruptions. The IEA continues to warn that global gas balances remain tight despite improving LNG flows, leaving the market sensitive to any renewed escalation.

These geopolitical risks have had a much stronger impact on European gas benchmarks than on U.S. natural gas, where abundant domestic production continues to cushion prices.

Technical picture keeps bears in control

The technical outlook remains fragile. As the chart shows, natural gas continues trading below its major moving averages after failing to sustain previous recovery attempts. Sellers remain in control, gradually pushing prices toward the important support area around $2.70.

This level could once again attract buying interest, as it has repeatedly acted as an important floor over recent months. However, momentum continues to favor the bears, and a decisive break below $2.70 would increase the risk of a decline toward $2.65 and potentially $2.60. On the upside, only a recovery above $2.85, followed by a move through $2.90, would begin to stabilize the near-term technical outlook.

Market focus shifts to storage data and weather forecasts

Looking ahead, traders will closely monitor the next EIA storage report, updated weather forecasts across the United States, LNG export activity and any new developments in the Middle East. As I wrote in Natural gas consolidates as supply outlook improves but geopolitical risks remain, while geopolitical uncertainty continues to provide an underlying layer of support for global gas prices, the combination of abundant U.S. supply and comfortable inventories is likely to keep rallies limited unless the fundamental balance tightens materially.
