AI hedge funds are often just repackaged factor strategies, Brett Caughran notes
AI hedge funds seen as repackaged factors

Brett Caughran stated that almost all AI hedge funds he has observed primarily use factor strategies that have been repackaged. He argued there are multiple reasons why this approach is unlikely to work or scale, citing issues such as the 'Factor Zoo,' low Sharpe ratios for multi-factor models, and the low cost of accessing these betas.

Caughran previously observed that most equity investment firms still use Excel and Bloomberg, with few startup software firms reaching $1 billion valuations in the space, according to his comments in an earlier report. He has also noted that AI successfully built a financial model for MU that equaled the quality and adherence of junior analyst output, as detailed in a separate analysis. These findings provide context for his skepticism over scaling AI-based factor strategies.
