Story Protocol delays major IP token unlock until August 2026
Story Protocol (IP) is delaying its first major token unlock until August 2026 in an effort to buy time for new partnerships amid a sharp decline in the token’s price over recent months.
Story Protocol announced it will postpone the first large unlock of its IP token by six months, moving the release of tokens allocated to the team and investors to August 2026.
The delay could help reduce short-term supply overhang and support the IP price, which has fallen by around 90% from its all-time high of $13.7 reached in October 2025 to its current level of $1.23.

In an interview with CoinDesk, project founder SY Lee pointed to Worldcoin’s 2024 decision to extend token lockups for investors and the team from three to five years. That move reduced short-term circulating supply, was framed as an extension of the development timeline, and was followed by double-digit price gains within hours of the announcement. Story is following a similar logic, although the IP token has not yet reacted to the news.
“If we were all salaried employees, we would want a shorter lockup,” Lee said, explaining that the decision reflects long-term commitment rather than financial stress.
Major investors, including Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), also support the delay as a way to limit supply shocks and stabilize conditions while product-market fit continues to develop. Their stance highlights a focus on risk management over short-term liquidity. The team plans to use the time until August to develop new use cases and partnerships.
New use cases aim to unlock monetization
According to Lee, Story will focus in the near term on registering ownership terms and usage rights for datasets and models used to train artificial intelligence systems—an initiative the project announced last year—with payments and royalty distribution embedded directly into smart contracts.
This shift moves Story away from tokenizing media content or collectibles toward what Lee described as “non-scrapable” human-generated data, such as multilingual voice samples and first-person video footage—assets that AI developers find harder to source legally at scale through traditional web scraping.
However, the transition delays visible on-chain revenue, as much of the expected value is tied to enterprise licensing agreements rather than retail transaction fees. Story’s founders cited this shift as the reason behind the decline in daily revenue, which peaked at $43,000 in September 2025 but has since fallen close to zero, raising concerns among investors.
