Bitcoin dominance reaches new highs

Bitcoin’s market dominance has surged to its highest level in years, even as the number of active users on its network declines.

On-chain data shows Bitcoin's share of the total cryptocurrency market has surpassed 61%, fueled by macroeconomic factors and investor sentiment, according to the Cryptopolitan.

Bitcoin strengthens as altcoin activity rises

According to analytics firm Matrixport, Bitcoin’s growing dominance is linked to economic developments in the United States. A stronger-than-expected jobs report has led to expectations of prolonged high interest rates, making riskier altcoins less attractive.

Historically, Bitcoin gains market share during periods of economic uncertainty, as investors seek stability in the largest cryptocurrency. At the same time, data from Etherscan highlights a 15% increase in Ethereum’s active users over the past six months, reaching 3.2 million daily addresses.

This divergence suggests that while Bitcoin remains the preferred store of value, users are engaging more with Ethereum and other Layer 1 networks for applications like decentralized finance and smart contracts.

Despite Bitcoin’s rising dominance, its total market cap fluctuated amid global uncertainties. TradingView data shows a 2.5% increase in Bitcoin’s price over 24 hours, supported by a 10% surge in trading volume. Analysts at CryptoQuant attribute this trend to bullish sentiment ahead of the upcoming Bitcoin halving event.

Meanwhile, altcoins have suffered sharp price declines despite increased on-chain activity. Ethereum has lost nearly 50% of its value since December, while Solana dropped 39% in the past month. The shifting capital flows suggest that while altcoins continue to evolve in utility, Bitcoin remains the dominant force in the crypto market.

The cryptocurrency market is currently experiencing a major shift as the altcoin season index hits record lows.
