Web3 supporters criticized Solana Foundation President Lily Liu for her skepticism about blockchain gaming. This has left many users doubting the future of games on the Solana platform.
The controversy was sparked by Liu’s comment on X regarding Meta’s decision to scale back its Metaverse project, which reportedly cost the company around $80 billion.
“Also, gaming on a blockchain is not coming back”, Liu wrote, reposting a Polymarket update.
While the metaverse and blockchain gaming are not directly linked, they share overlapping concepts. Blockchain technology was widely seen as a foundation for open digital worlds, with crypto games expected to drive early adoption.
Solana was considered a strong contender due to its high speed and low transaction costs, essential for real-time gameplay. However, many Web3 gaming projects are now struggling or shutting down. The sector has fallen short of expectations, with GameFi tokens declining sharply after the 2021 boom and investments from firms like a16z, Framework Ventures, and Animoca Brands under pressure.
Blockchain gaming continues to face criticism for weak tokenomics and prioritizing earnings over gameplay. Still, some companies, including Mythical Games, are pushing forward with hybrid models. Gunzilla Games’ “Off the Grid” allows users to play with or without blockchain integration.
Despite Liu’s skepticism, developers are calling for clearer direction. Some viewed her comments as trolling, while others questioned the future of existing Solana-based games.
From a broader perspective, the debate highlights a shift in the industry: moving away from “play-to-earn” toward gameplay-first models where blockchain serves as supporting infrastructure. This transition could help restore user trust and drive long-term growth.
At the same time, such statements pose reputational risks for Solana. Public skepticism from key figures may slow developer adoption and investment inflows, especially as competing blockchains continue to target the gaming sector.
