Coinbase details July trading outage after configuration change disrupted operations
A planned infrastructure update at Coinbase triggers a platform-wide outage on July 14 that temporarily disrupts trading, transfers and card activity. The incident lasts about 50 minutes and hits retail, institutional and developer services as the company expands its broader financial platform ambitions.
Highlights
- Coinbase experienced a major outage from 12:37 PM to 1:25 PM ET on July 14, halting trading, transfers, swaps, and some Prime services due to a Kubernetes network misconfiguration.
- The incident stemmed from an undetected resource name collision during a 'low-risk' migration, disrupting nearly all internal workflows but not putting user funds at risk.
- COIN shares rose over 11% to $178.74 during publication as Coinbase emphasized moves to improve infrastructure resilience amid ongoing expansion into institutional prime and stock trading services.
Outage cause and affected services
As reported by The Block, citing Coinbase, the disruption begins at 12:37 PM ET on July 14 and lasts until about 1:25 PM ET, affecting retail and institutional trading, deposits and withdrawals, Coinbase Card debit transactions, onchain swaps on Base and Solana DEX integrations, and some Prime services. The company says the outage stems from an unintended misconfiguration of a key network component during a routine, "low-risk" configuration change to a shared production Kubernetes cluster. The update is part of a migration to a new service deployment model, but a resource name collision that pre-production checks do not detect causes a system-wide blockage.
Coinbase says the loss of network access affects nearly all internal asynchronous workflows used to settle trades, complete transfers and authorize card transactions. It adds that user funds are never at risk, and transactions left in flight are completed once service is restored.
Operational pressure during expansion
The outage comes as Coinbase pushes deeper into institutional prime services and seeks to compete more directly with platforms such as Robinhood in stock trading, part of a broader effort to become what it calls an "Everything Exchange" for users' financial activity. The company has faced previous service disruptions, including earlier this year, and operational reliability remains a key issue for a crypto exchange serving a widening set of products and customers. Coinbase says its goal is zero downtime and that it is redesigning infrastructure so it can revert and recover more quickly if a similar failure happens again.
On Tuesday, Coinbase's status page also shows that some users may be experiencing delayed deposits and withdrawals via SEPA. Shares of Coinbase, traded as COIN, are up more than 11% at publication time to $178.74, according to The Block's price page.
In our earlier analysis of Coinbase (COIN) stock, we noted that the price was showing strong short- and medium-term bullish momentum above key moving averages, while also flashing overbought signals that could lead to near-term consolidation. The piece highlighted a likely trading range around the mid-$160s to mid-$180s, with $166.57 as key support and $184.51 as a pivotal resistance level, emphasizing that the move lacked a clear fundamental catalyst at the time.
