Hashdex will liquidate its Hashdex Bitcoin ETF (DEFI), with trading set to end on Aug. 17. Investors who continue to hold shares after delisting will receive cash distributions following the sale of the fund's remaining Bitcoin holdings.
As of July 30, 2026, the fund held approximately $14.7 million in assets. At the same time, Hashdex manages more than $200 million across investment products available to U.S. investors.
In a press release, the company said the decision followed a review of the fund's asset size, trading liquidity, operating expenses, investor demand, and its fit within Hashdex's broader lineup of index-based products.
Trading to end on Aug. 17
Shareholders will be able to sell fund shares on NYSE Arca until the close of trading on Aug. 17. After that, the Bitcoin ETF will stop accepting creation orders and will be delisted.
Investors who retain their shares beyond the final trading day will receive a cash liquidation distribution. Hashdex currently expects those payments to be made on Aug. 28.
Once trading ends, the fund will sell its remaining Bitcoin holdings and cease pursuing its investment objective. Instead, it will focus solely on winding up operations, settling liabilities, and distributing the remaining assets to shareholders.
Payouts will depend on Bitcoin's price
Hashdex said the final liquidation payment will reflect the fund's net asset value on the liquidation date, after accounting for closing expenses and transaction costs.
The company also warned that the final payout could vary significantly depending on Bitcoin's price during the liquidation process.
The fund's closure comes amid broader debate over the long-term outlook for spot Bitcoin ETFs. Earlier, Bloomberg analyst Eric Balchunas said the sector could follow the historical cycle of gold ETFs, characterized by rapid growth, a sharp correction, and an extended period of stagnation before the next phase of expansion.
Earlier, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $132 million in net inflows. Analysts said the fresh capital helped support Bitcoin near $61,183 after an extended period of outflows.
