UK derivatives rollout follows MiFID approval
As reported by The Block, Coinbase says the new offering for eligible UK professional clients includes more than 170 contracts across crypto, commodities, equities and foreign exchange. The exchange says perpetuals are available around the clock with leverage of up to 50x, while dated futures carry fixed settlement dates and leverage of up to 20x.Coinbase says its options products are limited to crypto and include calls, puts and multi-leg strategies. The company adds that access is restricted to investors who meet eligibility requirements and are classified as professional clients.
The launch follows Coinbase's recently announced MiFID license, which the company says allows it to offer derivatives contracts in the UK. The company says the new permissions expand its ability to add more products for both professional traders and retail investors in the market.
Broader UK product push and revenue mix
The derivatives launch adds another category to Coinbase's broader UK expansion beyond crypto trading. Last week, the exchange began rolling out access to nearly 4,000 U.S. stocks for eligible UK users, adding equities trading alongside crypto and fiat holdings.Coinbase has also been emphasizing revenue sources beyond bitcoin spot trading. In its second-quarter report, the company says 88% of net revenue comes from sources other than bitcoin spot trading, while its share of global crypto trading volume reaches a record 10.3%, up from 9.1% in the first quarter.
Coinbase describes itself as the most comprehensively regulated crypto player in the UK market.
