Coinbase shares fall as weak quarter deepens debate over crypto trading recovery
Coinbase faces renewed pressure

A prolonged slump in crypto prices and trading volumes is pressuring Coinbase's near-term performance even as analysts largely maintain their longer-term constructive view. The company misses second-quarter expectations across key financial metrics and issues third-quarter guidance below consensus, leaving Wall Street divided over how quickly activity can recover.

Highlights

  • Coinbase Q2 revenue of $1.22 billion and adjusted EBITDA of $208 million missed expectations amid weak crypto prices and low trading volumes, sending shares down 6%.
  • Coinbase grew its global crypto trading market share to a record 10.3% in the quarter, the third consecutive quarterly gain despite an industry-wide downturn.
  • Non-trading revenue streams are growing—with prediction markets surpassing a $100 million annual run rate and Coinbase One exceeding one million subscribers—but remain too small to offset core transaction weakness.

Quarter miss and diverging analyst views

As reported by CoinDesk, Coinbase reports second-quarter revenue of $1.22 billion and adjusted EBITDA of $208 million, missing expectations across nearly every major financial metric as weaker crypto prices and subdued trading volumes weigh on results.

Third-quarter guidance also comes in below consensus, leading several firms to cut estimates and lower price targets. Shares are down 6% just before the market open, reflecting investor concern that the soft trading environment may persist for longer than previously expected.

Even bullish analysts describe the quarter as weak. Cantor Fitzgerald calls it another soft quarter driven by depressed crypto prices and weaker spot trading volumes, while Oppenheimer says the shortfall reflects broader market weakness rather than company-specific operational problems.

Benchmark and William Blair take a similar view, arguing the headline miss does not fully capture progress in Coinbase's longer-term strategy. William Blair says the post-earnings selloff could represent a buying opportunity if crypto market conditions eventually improve.

Market share gains support long-term case

One area of broad agreement is that Coinbase continues to gain share even as the wider industry contracts. The company says it captures a record 10.3% share of global crypto trading volume in the quarter, marking its third consecutive quarterly gain.

Benchmark, Oppenheimer, Clear Street and Cantor highlight that figure as evidence that trading activity is consolidating onto larger regulated exchanges during periods of market stress. That trend supports the view that Coinbase could emerge stronger when volumes recover, even if current market conditions remain difficult.

Analysts also view the company's expansion beyond spot trading as encouraging, though they say these newer businesses are still too small to offset weakness in core transaction revenue. Coinbase is diversifying through prediction markets, derivatives, subscriptions, stablecoins and its Base blockchain, while prediction markets surpass a $100 million annualized revenue run rate and Coinbase One exceeds one million paid subscribers.

Its Circle partnership for USDC is also renewed on existing terms, removing a key investor concern. Still, Barclays says July transaction revenue and the company's third-quarter outlook suggest consensus estimates remain too high unless trading activity rebounds, underscoring the main divide on Wall Street over the timing of any recovery.

Our earlier report on the New York federal court ruling in a Coinbase customer lawsuit explained that the judge dismissed claims tied to matched transactions, which represent virtually all of the platform’s trading volume. However, the court allowed a narrower set of allegations to proceed related to inventory transactions—cases where Coinbase sold tokens from its own holdings—keeping a key legal overhang in view even as the broader case was significantly trimmed.
