Bitcoin set for rare September gain as yields and November events test Q4 outlook
Bitcoin’s rare September rally

Bitcoin is approaching an unusual September advance after rising about 7% this month, putting it on course for a third straight monthly gain. That would break a pattern seen since 2013 in which every positive August was followed by a September decline, while setting up a stronger finish to the third quarter.

Highlights

  • Bitcoin has gained about 7% in September, following a 25% rise in August, positioning Q3 for a more than 40% cumulative gain.
  • Bitcoin is trading at $84,000 as global bond yields rise, with the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield above 5.2% and the MOVE index exceeding 100.
  • Upcoming November events, including Anthropic's potential IPO and the U.S. midterm elections, could pressure liquidity and increase market volatility.

September performance and fourth-quarter setup

As reported by CoinDesk, bitcoin has climbed about 7% in September after a 25% gain in August, leaving it close to a rare positive monthly finish with two calendar days remaining.

A positive close would give bitcoin consecutive monthly gains from July through September and leave the third quarter up more than 40%. The period would mark its first positive quarter since Q3 2025, adding to expectations for the fourth quarter, which CoinGlass data shows has historically been the cryptocurrency's strongest stretch with an average gain of about 77%.

Macro pressures and November risk events

Bitcoin is trading at $84,000, but the broader market backdrop remains unsettled. Global bond yields are rising, the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield is above 5.2%, and the MOVE index, which tracks bond market volatility, is above 100 and nearing year-to-date highs.

Oil prices holding above $90 a barrel are adding to inflation concerns, while gold fell about 3% on Monday to just above $4,000 an ounce. November could bring added pressure on liquidity and risk appetite as Anthropic's reported IPO plans may draw capital toward a major equity listing, and the U.S. midterm elections could inject further volatility as investors weigh the policy outlook.

In our earlier coverage of Anthropic’s planned IPO after the November midterms, we outlined how the company’s prospectus pairs massive AI-driven spending ambitions with unusually detailed risk disclosures, including safety and oversight concerns. We also noted that the listing is shaping up as a test of investor appetite for AI equities in a higher-yield environment, given the firm’s heavy funding needs and revenue concentration among a small number of customers.
