Bitcoin steadies near $86,000 as stronger U.S. dollar raises pressure on crypto markets
Bitcoin holds steady as dollar rises

Currency and bond market moves are testing demand for risk assets at the start of October, even as bitcoin remains near recent highs. A firmer dollar, weaker euro and higher U.S. yields are increasing pressure on global liquidity conditions and investor appetite for crypto.

Highlights

  • U.S. Dollar Index climbs to 102.5, an 18-month high, driven by euro weakness and a shift above its 200-day moving average at 99.
  • Bitcoin trades steadily near $86,000, displaying resilience despite higher yields and the Fed's September rate hike to 3.75%-4%.
  • Markets anticipate a Fed funds target range of 4.5%-4.75% by June 2027, as long-term U.S. yields reach two-decade highs and fiscal concerns escalate.

Dollar strength and euro weakness shape market conditions

As reported by CoinDesk, the U.S. Dollar Index, which tracks the dollar against a basket of six major currencies, reaches roughly 102.5 on Monday, its highest level in nearly 18 months. After climbing from around 99 in early September, the index now sits comfortably above its 200-day moving average, also near 99, a sign of strengthening bullish momentum.

A stronger dollar typically creates headwinds for risk assets because it raises the cost of servicing dollar-denominated debt outside the U.S. and reduces the purchasing power of overseas investors. When higher U.S. interest rates accompany that move, cash and government bonds become more attractive, lifting the hurdle for allocating money to equities and bitcoin.

Euro weakness is adding to that trend because the single currency accounts for 57.6% of the DXY basket. The euro falls toward 1.12, a 17-month low, as fiscal and political concerns weigh on confidence, with France facing pressure over its deficit and borrowing costs ahead of next year's presidential election, while Spain heads toward a snap election on Nov. 29 after Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez calls the vote.

Higher yields test bitcoin resilience

Bitcoin nevertheless continues to hold around $86,000 after a strong start to October, showing relative resilience despite tightening financial conditions. The Federal Reserve's September decision to raise rates by 25 basis points to 3.75% to 4% helps underpin the dollar's strength.

Markets are also pricing in further tightening, with a target range of 4.5% to 4.75% emerging as the most likely outcome by June 2027. Rising Treasury yields, together with concerns over inflation, government borrowing and fiscal sustainability, are reinforcing pressure across risk-sensitive assets, while long-term U.S. yields reach levels last seen more than two decades ago.

In our earlier article, we examined how the euro slid to a 17-month low as investors focused on France’s fiscal strains and political deadlock, while the spread between French and German bond yields widened. We also noted that the U.S. dollar remained firm amid elevated Treasury yields and shifting expectations for Federal Reserve policy, shaping broader market risk appetite.
