Ether liquidations outpace bitcoin in $1.19 billion crypto market flush
Leveraged crypto markets are under pressure as rate-hike fears, geopolitical tensions and fresh concerns about artificial intelligence trigger broad selling across digital assets. Ether absorbs the heaviest hit over the past 24 hours, with liquidations exceeding bitcoin's total despite a market value that is less than one-fifth as large.
Highlights
- About $1.19 billion in crypto positions are liquidated in 24 hours, with ether suffering $356 million and bitcoin $298 million in forced closures.
- Ether liquidations are disproportionately severe, totaling $1.2 million per $1 billion market value versus $180,000 for bitcoin, as ether drops over 3% to $2,490.
- Bitcoin rebounds to $82,200 after President Trump signals no U.S. strike on Iran, with 78% of $25 million in recent liquidations hitting bearish traders.
Liquidation wave hits ether positions hardest
As reported by CoinDesk, about $1.19 billion in crypto positions is liquidated over 24 hours, with more than $1 billion of the total coming from bullish bets. Ether accounts for about $356 million of those forced closures, ahead of bitcoin at $298 million, while the biggest single wipeout is a nearly $20 million ether position on Hyperliquid.A liquidation happens when traders borrow to increase the size of a bet and losses consume the collateral behind it, prompting an exchange to close the position automatically. That process can intensify a sell-off because positions are forced out into a falling market, adding pressure on prices and triggering further losses for other leveraged traders.
Measured against market size, ether takes far heavier damage than bitcoin. Ether liquidations amount to roughly $1.2 million for every $1 billion of market value, compared with about $180,000 for bitcoin, while ether falls more than 3% to about $2,490 and bitcoin loses about 1%.
Macro pressures and rebound shift losses to shorts
Other tokens also see sizable losses, with SOL bets accounting for another $71 million in liquidations, XRP for $34 million and NEAR for $25 million, while all other tokens combined add about $119 million. Bitcoin drops from about $83,200 to as low as roughly $80,400 late Thursday after Fed minutes show most officials expect another rate hike before year-end and a report that the Pentagon is preparing for renewed combat in Iran pushes oil higher.Nervousness in the market also grows after Ethereum researcher Justin Drake warns that artificial intelligence could break the math securing crypto wallets sooner than expected. Traders have been building leverage all week as bitcoin moves between $83,000 and $87,000, leaving a large pool of positions vulnerable once that range breaks.
Losses then shift toward bearish traders as bitcoin rebounds to about $82,200 after President Trump says the U.S. will not strike Iran before the midterm elections. About 78% of the roughly $25 million liquidated over the past four hours comes from traders betting on further declines, including nearly $12 million of about $13 million in the past hour alone.
The move comes a day before the anniversary of Oct. 10, 2025, when a record $19 billion is liquidated in a single day, roughly 16 times Thursday's total. Bitcoin now sits about $800 below $83,000, the level where Thursday's selling begins.
Our earlier report on federal scrutiny of CFTC staffing cuts explained that the GAO is set to review how workforce reductions are affecting the regulator’s ability to police fast-growing crypto, derivatives, and prediction markets. The piece noted a steep decline in staffing alongside fewer enforcement actions and sharply lower monetary relief, raising questions about whether the agency can take on expanded crypto responsibilities with reduced resources.
