Bitwise CIO names four crypto assets with long-term growth potential
Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan has identified Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and Chainlink as crypto assets that could benefit from long-term changes in financial markets. He believes Bitcoin could reach several hundred thousand dollars if its allocation in traditional investment portfolios increases.
Speaking on the New Era Finance Podcast, Hougan linked Bitcoin's prospects to the debasement of fiat currencies amid rising government debt and spending. In his view, investors will increasingly seek assets that can preserve their purchasing power.
Hougan noted that traditional portfolios consisting of stocks and bonds remain exposed to currency risks. He sees allocating part of a portfolio to Bitcoin and gold as one way to reduce that exposure.
Bitcoin could reach several hundred thousand dollars
Hougan's forecast is based on an investment strategy known as the debasement trade, which aims to protect capital against currency depreciation. The strategy involves investing in assets that may retain their value during inflation and a decline in the purchasing power of money.
The Bitwise CIO suggested that investors could eventually adopt a portfolio allocation model in which 90% of capital remains in fiat-denominated assets, while the remaining 10% is allocated primarily to Bitcoin and gold.
"If this approach becomes widespread, we could see enormous capital inflows into Bitcoin, and its price could reach several hundred thousand dollars," Hougan said.
He believes Bitcoin offers the most attractive risk-reward profile among digital assets. However, he sees its long-term prospects as primarily driven by growing demand for assets that can preserve value.
Ethereum, Solana and Chainlink among top picks
Beyond Bitcoin, Hougan highlighted Ethereum, Solana and Chainlink as projects that could benefit from the tokenization of traditional financial instruments.
He expects the adoption of stablecoins and the migration of real-world assets onto blockchains to become defining trends in the cryptocurrency market over the next decade. When selecting projects, investors should consider how they generate revenue and the characteristics of their token supply.
Hougan also mentioned Hyperliquid, a platform focused on derivatives trading, as well as Zcash and Venice. He highlighted the latter two projects for their focus on privacy technologies and artificial intelligence solutions, respectively.
However, long-term forecasts come with persistent risks for the cryptocurrency market. One year after the October 2025 market crash, which triggered approximately $19 billion in leveraged position liquidations, analysts have noted improvements in tools for monitoring market instability.
Earlier, we reported that South Korea's Jeonbuk Bank began offering corporate loans backed by Bitcoin. The program allows companies to obtain financing using cryptocurrency as collateral.
