PayPal launches crypto payment platform for U.S. merchants
As part of its strategy to expand cryptocurrency payments, PayPal is launching a new service called Pay with Crypto.
The company announced that the platform, which will be available to U.S. merchants in the coming weeks, aims to make crypto payments accessible and transform cross-border trade for sellers.
"Businesses of all sizes are under enormous global pressure — from rising costs for international payments to complex integrations. Today, we’re removing those barriers and helping every business achieve their goals," said Alex Chriss, President and CEO of PayPal.
The platform will support major cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin and Ethereum, as well as stablecoins like Tether (USDT) and USDC, with plans to support up to 100 cryptocurrencies in the future.
"Pay with Crypto" will also integrate with major crypto exchanges such as Coinbase, OKX, Binance, and Kraken, and will connect to wallets like Phantom, MetaMask, and Exodus.
Crypto payments are gaining popularity
Merchants opting into the service will gain access to over 650 million crypto users and benefit from up to 90% lower fees. Payments can be instantly converted to stablecoins or fiat.
"Imagine a shopper in Guatemala buying a gift from a seller in Oklahoma City. With PayPal’s open platform, that seller can now accept crypto, increase their profits, pay lower transaction fees, get instant access to funds, and earn up to 4% APY on PYUSD held in PayPal," added Chriss.
PayPal’s solution is expected to further boost crypto adoption, particularly stablecoins. The company recently announced a partnership with payment platform Fiserv, making stablecoin transactions more accessible to global businesses.
Another key partnership involves Venmo and other digital wallets under the PayPal Word initiative, focused not just on simplifying payments but also on reducing costs, supporting merchant growth, and expanding payment options for consumers.
