Third-quarter attestation and reserve position
Tether News reports that Tether International, S.A. de C.V. has published its attestation for the third quarter of 2026, prepared by BDO, covering the company's financial figures and the reserves backing USD₮ as of Sept. 30, 2026.The company says USD₮ issuance holds broadly steady at $184 billion through the first three quarters of 2026 despite market volatility. Over the same period, Tether generates $4.5 billion in net operating profit, including $1.5 billion in the third quarter, in line with the previous quarter.
Tether says U.S. Treasury bills and reverse repurchase agreements continue to provide most of that income. At quarter-end, total reserve assets stand at $191.5 billion, with most holdings in liquid, short-duration instruments intended to support redemptions across different market conditions.
The company states that direct and indirect holdings of U.S. Treasury bills total $132.4 billion. Management also says total assets amount to $191.45 billion, total liabilities reach $183.5 billion, and assets exceed liabilities by about $7.95 billion.
Crypto market implications and liquidity focus
Tether says its reserve buffer nearly doubles from $4.1 billion at the end of the second quarter to $7.95 billion, an increase of $3.8 billion. The larger excess reserve position strengthens the company's capacity to absorb stress while meeting redemption demand for its dollar-linked token.Chief Executive Paolo Ardoino says the company is focused on keeping USD₮ dependable during periods of pressure in markets and financial systems. He says the combination of third-quarter profitability and nearly $8 billion in excess reserves provides a stronger long-term foundation for liquidity management and infrastructure support amid a volatile geopolitical backdrop.
In our earlier article on sovereign borrowing risks in a higher-rate environment, we noted that persistent geopolitical shocks and elevated fiscal spending can tighten global funding conditions and strain government refinancing. We also highlighted that emerging and frontier markets are particularly exposed, as higher energy and food costs can lift inflation and worsen debt-servicing burdens—factors that feed into broader market volatility and liquidity demands.
