Hong Kong launches 24/7 settlement for tokenized assets
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has expanded its Project Ensemble pilot to enable round-the-clock settlement of transactions involving tokenized assets. The next stage will involve testing regulated stablecoins in transactions with government debt instruments.
According to an HKMA press release, the EnsembleTX project has entered a new phase that enables real-value transactions 24/7. This will allow banks and their clients to transfer funds across borders, manage tokenized investments, and conduct financial operations outside traditional payment system operating hours.
Previously, project participants used Hong Kong's existing dollar settlement system, which limited transaction hours. When real-value trials began in November 2025, the regulator was already planning to introduce tokenized central bank money to support round-the-clock settlement.
Project Ensemble was launched in March 2024 to explore the use of central bank digital money for interbank settlement of tokenized asset transactions. In August of the same year, the HKMA opened a sandbox where banks could connect their own tokenized deposit platforms and test transactions.
Stablecoins to be introduced into government bond transactions
Speaking at Hong Kong FinTech Week on November 2, HKMA Chief Executive Eddie Yue said tokenized central bank money would serve as the foundation for continuous settlement infrastructure. According to him, tokenized bonds, money market funds, and bank deposits are already being used in practice.
The regulator also reported the successful completion of trial transactions in the secondary market involving tokenized Exchange Fund Bills. These are short-term debt instruments issued by the HKMA to manage liquidity in Hong Kong's financial system.
The authority plans to expand the trials to include regulated stablecoins. This will allow it to test their use in settling transactions involving tokenized debt instruments.
How tokenization changes banking and investing
In the traditional financial system, purchasing bonds does not always mean receiving them immediately. One or more business days may pass between executing a trade, transferring funds, and delivering the securities. During this period, participants' funds remain tied up in the settlement process. The use of tokenized assets can reduce this period to minutes or even seconds, provided the payment infrastructure supports such transactions.
For banks, this means being able to release funds more quickly and use them for new transactions. Investors, meanwhile, can buy and sell assets faster without waiting for lengthy settlement procedures to be completed. However, tokenization alone does not guarantee instant transactions: compatible payment systems, sufficient liquidity, and clear rules governing digital assets are also required.
As a reminder, Hong Kong's market is gaining momentum rapidly.
