Scammers target Aave users with phishing links in Google Ads campaign
Decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol Aave became the target of a phishing campaign shortly after announcing a major milestone of $60 billion in net deposits across 14 networks.
Aave’s deposits have more than tripled from $18 billion in August 2024 to the current level, reports Cointelegraph.
The surge in platform usage coincided with malicious actors launching phishing attacks via Google Ads, aiming to exploit the growing user base. Blockchain security firm PeckShield issued an alert on Thursday, warning that scammers had placed fake Aave-related links through Google Ads. These links redirected users to fraudulent investment platforms disguised as legitimate Aave services.
Scam tactics and phishing methods explained
Victims of the phishing scam were prompted to connect their cryptocurrency wallets to the fake websites. Once connected, the scammers could access users’ funds and initiate unauthorized transfers—an action that’s irreversible due to the nature of blockchain transactions.
Although the total amount of losses has yet to be confirmed, the use of Google Ads has given the phishing campaign wide visibility. This significantly increases the potential damage, especially among less experienced DeFi users unaware of the attack.
User protection tips and protocol response
Phishing attacks are designed to deceive users by mimicking trusted brands and services. To stay safe, crypto users are advised to always double-check URLs, avoid clicking on paid search ads when accessing DeFi platforms, and never share private keys or seed phrases.
If a wallet is compromised, users should immediately transfer any remaining assets to a new secure wallet, revoke access permissions using services like Revoke.cash, and report the incident to the affected protocol. Additionally, compromised wallets should not be reused.
