Sky votes on penalty for delayed MKR to SKY swap
Sky, formerly known as MakerDAO, has launched a governance vote on whether to introduce a “delayed upgrade penalty” for users who have not yet exchanged their MKR tokens for SKY.
The penalty is part of Sky’s multi-stage “Endgame” program, which phases out MKR in favor of SKY and completes the transition, initiated last spring, to make SKY the protocol’s sole governance token.
The vote is designed to accelerate the migration process and simplify operations with parallel governance tokens — an important step for both new users and crypto exchanges handling the tokens.
Accelerating standardization after rebranding
If approved, starting September 22, conversions from MKR to SKY will incur a 1% fee, which will increase by 1% each month thereafter.
According to The Block, around 81% of MKR has already been converted to SKY. However, approximately 176,070 MKR worth over $316 million remain unexchanged. The conversion rate stays fixed at 1 MKR = 24,000 SKY, with Sky also offering a 1:1 exchange between its stablecoin DAI and USDS.
