Highlights

  • The US Treasury's increase in bond buybacks has weakened the dollar, making Pound Sterling more sensitive to global risk changes.
  • A rebound in US Treasury yields has pressured the Australian Dollar, which found no support from recent PMI data, giving Pound Sterling a relative advantage.
  • GBP/AUD trades below key moving averages with downside momentum dominating, likely to fluctuate between A$1.8967 and A$1.9157 over the next 2 to 3 days.

Weaker dollar and US yields drive pound's outperformance against AUD

The US Treasury's decision to increase bond buybacks has contributed to a weaker dollar environment, amplifying Pound Sterling's responsiveness to shifts in global risk sentiment, according to Investing.com. This was accompanied by a rebound in US Treasury bond yields, placing renewed pressure on the Australian Dollar as higher US yields often prompt capital outflows from risk-sensitive currencies. Recent PMI data also failed to lend support to the AUD, reinforcing an environment in which Pound Sterling maintains a relative edge versus the Australian currency, as noted by Fxstreet.

Bearish bias persists with oversold signals and resistance overhead

GBP/AUD is trading below the MA-20 at A$1.9143, the MA-50 at A$1.9134, and the MA-200 at A$1.9114, placing all key moving averages overhead. The Ichimoku Kijun line at A$1.9134 acts as immediate resistance. Both MACD and ADX point to ongoing downside momentum, while RSI, Stochastic RSI, and CCI indicate oversold conditions. At the same time, Bull/Bear Power continues to confirm dominance by sellers, and the Awesome Oscillator trend reinforces this downward bias. The array of oversold readings suggests scope for a short-term rebound, although bearish momentum remains in control.

Downside risk elevated as range-bound outlook prevails

Over the next 2–3 days, GBP/AUD is projected to remain within a typical volatility band between A$1.8967 and A$1.9157. The probability of a further rise is currently very low, while additional downside has a high chance of emerging. The baseline expectation is for stabilization inside this range. A bullish case would require a decisive break above resistance near A$1.9134, while a clear bearish scenario would unfold if support at A$1.8967 is breached.

Viktoras Karapetjanc, expert at Traders Union, sees the current GBP/AUD setup as shaped by global macro developments and ongoing bearish technical momentum. He notes that US Treasury actions and weak Australian PMI data have tilted sentiment in favor of Pound Sterling. The analyst believes sellers still control the pair, but oversold signals suggest a potential short-term rebound. In Karapetjanc’s view, further downside is more likely unless A$1.9134 is reclaimed. "If risk sentiment stays uncertain and resistance holds at A$1.9134, my outlook favors more pressure on the Australian Dollar in the near term."

Earlier, analysts noted that GBP/AUD was under sustained bearish pressure, with downside risks dominating the technical outlook. The latest analysis reaffirms this negative bias amid persistent seller control, highlighting A$1.8967 as a key level to monitor for signs of a potential further decline.
