Highlights

  • Swiss August CPI and second-quarter GDP both exceeded market expectations, triggering profit-taking in EUR/CHF and USD/CHF pairs.
  • Swiss National Bank policy expectations held steady as broader selling pressure persisted in Swiss franc trading flows.
  • USD/CHF is trading just below key resistance at Fr.0.8096, with technicals mixed and a forecast range of Fr.0.8024 to Fr.0.8148 over the next five days.

Profit-taking dominates as upbeat Swiss data triggers broader selling pressure

Recent Swiss economic releases, including the August Consumer Price Index and second-quarter Gross Domestic Product, exceeded market expectations. This triggered profit-taking in both EUR/CHF and USD/CHF, impacting trading flows for the US Dollar versus Swiss Franc. Market expectations for Swiss National Bank monetary policy were unchanged, though price action has remained under broader selling pressure.

Anton Kharitonov, expert at Traders Union, points out that stronger Swiss data and muted policy shifts left USD/CHF under heavy selling pressure. He spots limited upside with the pair constrained below its 50-day average at Fr.0.8096 and clear evidence of lingering bearish momentum after the open. Kharitonov emphasizes overbought technical readings alongside mixed momentum, arguing that buyers lack conviction for follow-through. He warns that the high Stochastic RSI and neutral MACD raise the risk of a technical pullback, especially if support at Fr.0.8085 fails. "Traders should remain defensive as long as USD/CHF stays capped by resistance — a downside break is still very plausible if macro driver fatigue sets in," he states.
Viktoras Karapetjanc, expert at Traders Union, views the latest Swiss GDP and CPI data as a temporary headwind for USD/CHF, not a trend changer. He notes that robust underlying support above key moving averages, combined with dominant buyer signals in several indicators, keeps the bullish structure intact. Karapetjanc highlights a wide forecast band with an upwards bias, suggesting further growth is likely if resistance at Fr.0.8096 gives way. "This market offers multiple bullish setups — I expect renewed upward momentum as long as the price stays above Fr.0.8085," he says.
Parshwa Turakhiya, analyst, reads the mixed momentum and high intraday volatility as a sign of tactical opportunities for short-term traders. She sees persistent buyer interest, but warns that overbought oscillators create scope for quick pullbacks within the noted range. Turakhiya emphasizes that both bullish breakouts and range reversals are likely to set up for nimble entries. "Near-term swings between Fr.0.8085 and Fr.0.8096 could drive sentiment-driven trades — I’d focus on exploiting volatility until a clear directional break emerges," she says.

Short-term support holds amid resistance as momentum signals split

USD/CHF is currently trading above its 20-day moving average at Fr.0.8078 and its 200-day moving average at Fr.0.7921, but is just below the 50-day moving average at Fr.0.8096. This positioning indicates short-term support is holding, medium-term resistance is in play, and the long-term trend remains bullish, with near-term levels framed by resistance at Fr.0.8096 and support at Fr.0.8085. Momentum readings are mixed: the MACD and ADX both signal a neutral trend, while the RSI at 58.37 and the CCI at 90.78 point to ongoing buyer interest. The BBP value above zero confirms buyers continue to dominate intraday, but Stochastic RSI is at 100, indicating overbought conditions. The Awesome Oscillator supports the prevailing positive bias with a strong buy signal. The pair opened nearly flat and is down to Fr.0.8086, slipping 0.54% from the previous close and positioned near the session low. Intraday volatility stands at 0.58%. Today’s action suggests mild bearish pressure after the open, even as longer-term momentum maintains a bullish tone.

Earlier, analysts noted that downside risks were becoming more prominent for USD/CHF, with the pair increasingly vulnerable to breaks below support. The current analysis adds a new dimension by highlighting stable short-term support and overbought momentum, signaling that a decisive move above medium-term resistance or below immediate support will likely drive the next directional move.
