Euro adoption uncertainty rises as inflation target shifts

Hungary's central bank has reduced its inflation target to 2.5%, bringing new attention to the criteria for euro adoption in the country. The government maintains a goal of meeting the Maastricht criteria for joining the euro by around 2030, though no formal date has been set for converting from the forint. The latest European Commission Convergence Report notes that Hungary does not yet meet some requirements, such as price stability and legal alignment with Eurosystem rules, and will need further progress on public finances and legislation to move closer to adopting the euro.

Anton Kharitonov, expert at Traders Union, sees continued technical and fundamental challenges for EUR/HUF bulls. He notes that while short- and medium-term momentum is positive, the pair remains capped by the long-term 200-day average, highlighting incomplete conviction. Oscillators reinforce warnings of downside exhaustion and seller dominance, even as intraday volatility trends higher. Fundamental hurdles such as Hungary’s slow legal and fiscal convergence for euro adoption raise doubts over sustained strength. "Any upside move here seems unsustainable unless both technical and institutional barriers are convincingly cleared," Kharitonov warns.
Viktoras Karapetjanc, expert at Traders Union, views the central bank’s lower inflation target as a constructive signal for Hungary’s euro trajectory. He believes the push for meeting Maastricht criteria and ongoing policy reforms support investor confidence and point to longer-term benefits. Technical structure remains broadly bullish above key averages, suggesting the market offers multiple setups for trend-followers. "With a strengthening policy backdrop and structural progress, I expect further growth opportunities for EUR/HUF as the bullish structure remains intact," Karapetjanc says.
Sholanke Dele, market strategist, focuses on sentiment risks and macro headwinds. He sees the pair trading in a narrow band with caution dominating order flows as depicted by oversold momentum readings and low conviction among buyers. Upcoming days will likely bring sideways movement, with potential for renewed selling pressure if critical support fails. "There is little to suggest any immediate trend reversal — sentiment leans defensive and the market may face further downside pressure," Dele states.

Short-term upside faces caution as oscillators diverge from trend

EUR/HUF is trading above both the 20-day (Ft364.17) and 50-day (Ft363.68) moving averages, but remains below the 200-day (Ft367.407) average. This configuration signals ongoing short- and medium-term bullish momentum, though the long-term trend continues to face mild bearish pressure. The nearest resistance stands at the week’s high of Ft365.333, with immediate support provided by the 20-day moving average at Ft364.17 and further resistance from the Ichimoku Kijun at Ft365.593. Momentum indicators are mixed: MACD and ADX are neutral, while the RSI (45.486), CCI (-130.34), and Stochastic RSI (15.397) all signal oversold conditions, indicating the potential for downside exhaustion. Bull/Bear Power at -0.194 confirms sellers dominate intraday momentum and also indicates oversold conditions. Intraday volatility measures 0.30%, highlighting strength toward the upper end of the daily range. The upward movement contrasts with caution signaled by various oscillators and confirms a divergence between short-term price action and overall momentum signals.

Earlier, analysts noted that the Hungarian central bank's steady rate stance and forward inflation guidance signaled a shift toward short-term bullish momentum for EUR/HUF. With the current divergence between short-term price action and overall momentum signals, traders should monitor the Ft365.333 resistance for a potential upside trigger in the coming sessions.
