Highlights

  • The Iranian Rial continues to weaken sharply as U.S. sanctions and financial restrictions deepen economic pressures on Iran.
  • Ongoing limits on Iran's global financial access are directly fueling heightened demand for USD/IRR.
  • USD/IRR shows robust bullish momentum with a projected range of IRR1,542,867 to IRR1,975,191 and overbought technical conditions suggest risk of near-term pullback.

Dollar demand spikes as Iranian economy falters under persistent sanctions

A recent report highlights the continued deterioration of the Iranian economy as the Rial sharply weakens under sustained U.S. sanctions and tightened blockades. These measures have further restricted Iran's access to global financial systems and deepened challenges for its domestic currency. The sharp decline in the Rial has directly lifted demand for USD/IRR.

Anton Kharitonov, expert at Traders Union, observes that the sharp rise in USD/IRR is driven by persistent U.S. sanctions and blockades, which continue to erode Iran’s economic foundation. He cautions that all major technical indicators currently flag overbought conditions, despite bullish price action. The alignment above moving averages signals persistent upside, but momentum readings suggest the rally could be exhausted soon. Kharitonov is also concerned about limited support below IRR1,752,227, increasing downside risk if sentiment shifts. "Traders should beware chasing further gains here — the technical setup suggests the risk of sharp corrections is growing as buying pressure runs ahead of fundamentals."
Viktoras Karapetjanc, expert at Traders Union, notes that macroeconomic and fundamental stressors — especially sanctions — are accelerating structural weakness in the Iranian Rial. He sees this as reinforcing strong demand for the USD, keeping the bullish structure of USD/IRR intact. The market is responding with confidence, and recent momentum reflects robust underlying flows. Karapetjanc expects further growth if breakout levels are cleared. "Clear opportunities remain for upside participation here as the policy backdrop supports a constructive long-term trajectory for USD/IRR."
Sholanke Dele, market strategist, sees the current USD/IRR rally as a reflection of continued risk-off sentiment toward Iranian assets. He remains skeptical, given that overbought signals and relentless sanctions policy cast doubt on the sustainability of these gains. The market is volatile and sentiment-driven, raising the risk of sharp reversals. "For now, I remain cautious — there is little real confidence amid policy risk and overstretched technicals."

Bullish momentum persists despite overbought signals near resistance levels

USD/IRR is trading well above its short-, medium-, and long-term moving averages, with current levels at IRR1,759,029 compared to the MA-20 (IRR1,392,337), MA-50 (IRR1,380,929), and MA-200 (IRR1,349,560). This positioning confirms strong bullish momentum across all timeframes, with near-term resistance at IRR1,761,570 and nearby support at IRR1,752,227. A bullish alignment of MA-50 versus MA-200 also supports the prevailing long-term trend. Momentum readings are robust, with the MACD signaling a buy and the ADX indicating a neutral trend. RSI, Stochastic RSI, and CCI are deep in overbought territory, warning of stretched conditions. Bull/Bear Power (BBP) shows clear dominance by buyers and also signals an overbought market, while the Awesome Oscillator (AO) remains neutral. Today the pair is higher by IRR9,923.84 (0.57%) after opening nearly flat, currently sitting near the session high with intraday volatility at 1.27%. The pair shows strength toward highs, but overbought signals contrast with MACD-driven bullish momentum.

Earlier, analysts noted that persistent U.S. sanctions and central bank interventions were driving sustained weakness in the Iranian rial and supporting upside momentum for USD/IRR. This view is reinforced by current technical strength and renewed sanctions pressure, making a breakout above resistance a key risk to monitor in the near term.
