Bank interventions spur forex supply amid rupiah volatility

Bank Indonesia intervened directly in both the spot and non-deliverable forward markets on Thursday in an effort to stabilize the Rupiah, a move that increases the supply of foreign currency and seeks to address short-term market imbalances. These actions, following similar interventions on Wednesday, reflect ongoing efforts by the central bank to manage liquidity and limit pressure on the currency. According to FXStreet, while Indonesia's foreign exchange reserves eased slightly in September, they remain near a five-month high, indicating some capacity to sustain further interventions. Taken together, these developments highlight the authorities' active response to recent volatility and the underlying fragility in the Rupiah's position.

Mixed oscillator signals cloud downside as support zones hold

On the technical front, AUD/IDR is trading below the MA-20 (Rp12,389) and MA-50 (Rp12,460) on the hourly chart, as well as below the longer-term MA-200 (Rp12,412) on the daily timeframe. The Ichimoku Kijun at Rp12,117 marks the nearest support zone. Indicator signals are mixed: MACD shows a Strong Sell, and ADX confirms a Sell, while RSI sits at 48.44 (Sell). Stoch RSI is in overbought territory, CCI is neutral, and Bull/Bear Power remains oversold. The divergence among oscillators suggests a lack of immediate consensus and highlights an uncertain short-term technical outlook.

Downside risk prevails with limited breakout potential

Looking ahead, the short-term forecast projects a typical volatility band for AUD/IDR between Rp12,178 and Rp12,592. The probability of an upward breakout is assessed as very low, with much higher chances of further downside. The baseline scenario anticipates the pair trading sideways within this range, while a move above resistance may enable a test of the upper boundary. If immediate support is breached, the price could extend its decline toward the lower end of the forecast band.

Viktoras Karapetjanc, expert at Traders Union, believes the decisive interventions by Bank Indonesia underscore both determination and lingering fragility in IDR sentiment. He sees the currency supported in the near term by strong FX reserves, but notes technical signals remain divided, limiting immediate recovery prospects for AUD/IDR. The current sideways range reflects a cautious but active policy backdrop. Constructive sentiment prevails, with upside contingent on clear confirmation. "Momentum could shift quickly if external pressure eases and intervention remains credible — I would watch for renewed strength above Rp12,460 as a first sign of a technical turnaround."

Earlier, analysts noted that AUD/IDR was exhibiting persistent bearish momentum despite holding key technical support levels. The latest developments, including continued intervention by Bank Indonesia and more pronounced technical signals, reinforce downside risks, making the integrity of immediate support a crucial factor for near-term direction.
