NZD softens across markets as rate hold triggers sentiment shift

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand unexpectedly left its Official Cash Rate unchanged at 2.75%, contrary to widespread expectations for a 25 basis point increase, according to Bloomberg. This decision reduced the yield appeal of the New Zealand dollar and signaled a more cautious outlook from policymakers, leading to a sharp repricing across NZD crosses. Market sentiment turned negative for the currency as investors reacted to the lack of tightening, reinforcing the downward direction for NZD/IDR.

Bearish momentum dominates as NZD/IDR probes oversold territory

On the technical front, NZD/IDR is trading below the MA-20 at Rp10,291 and the MA-50 at Rp10,304 on the hourly chart, as well as beneath the daily MA-200 at Rp10,244. The immediate resistance is identified at the Ichimoku Kijun level of Rp10,249, while support stands at Rp10,043. Momentum indicators remain strongly bearish: the MACD, ADX, and Awesome Oscillator are all signaling sell, with the RSI at 26.09, Stoch RSI, and CCI indicating deeply oversold territory. Bull/Bear Power is also in oversold condition, confirming sellers’ dominance and the absence of bullish divergence in short-term momentum.

Downside risk persists as breakout above resistance remains elusive

Over the next 2-3 trading days, NZD/IDR is expected to consolidate within the Rp10,043 to Rp10,263 range, reflecting the typical volatility band relative to current levels. The probability of an upward move is assessed as very low, while the likelihood of further declines is very high. A bullish turn would require a firm break above the Rp10,249 resistance, but barring such a development, extended downside risk is likely upon a breach of Rp10,043 support.

Anton Kharitonov, expert at Traders Union, notes persistent selling in NZD/IDR after the RBNZ’s unexpected rate hold, which sharply undermined market sentiment for the New Zealand dollar. He observes that technicals remain strongly bearish, with multiple key levels breached and indicators showing deep oversold readings. The analyst sees little potential for a rebound unless the price decisively reclaims Rp10,249. "As long as NZD/IDR trades below resistance, downside risk dominates and buyers should stay cautious."

Earlier, analysts noted that NZD/IDR had shifted into a neutral-to-bearish phase as the pair struggled beneath its short- and medium-term averages. The latest policy moves from the Reserve Bank of New Zealand and fresh technical breakdowns reinforce the bearish scenario, making the Rp10,043 support level a critical threshold to monitor for additional downside in the coming sessions.
