Rate hike speculation rises as BOJ signals 2% target met

Recent activity in the Dollar vs Yen pair was affected by monetary policy announcements from both the US and Japan. The Bank of Japan kept its benchmark rate on hold and indicated that inflation had reached its 2% goal, raising the prospect of a potential rate hike in December. Mixed US economic data, with softer Personal Income and Spending figures counterbalancing strong GDP prints, as well as shifts in global fixed income sentiment, were also reported as factors influencing currency moves.

Anton Kharitonov, expert at Traders Union, believes USD/JPY faces notable technical and macro pressures. He notes the pair is now below critical 20- and 200-day moving averages, confirming persistent bearish momentum after the Bank of Japan's inflation comments. Despite some intraday bullish signals, Kharitonov points to conflicting indicators and warns buyers may be overextended with the overbought Stochastic RSI. Mixed US data and a lack of aggressive policy action in Japan muddle fundamental support. "Downside risks dominate for now — I see little conviction for a sustained rebound in this environment," says Kharitonov.
Viktoras Karapetjanc, expert at Traders Union, highlights new macro opportunities as the Bank of Japan maintains its policy stance. He sees the achievement of the 2% inflation goal as a signal for possible positive surprises in rate adjustments ahead. Karapetjanc argues the moderate downside move is technical and not a break in bullish structure. He expects further volatility to offer setups for upside re-engagement. "This is a constructive pause — further growth in USD/JPY remains likely as long as the ¥157.05 level holds," says Karapetjanc.
Sholanke Dele, market strategist, sees recent price weakness as a consequence of fragile sentiment following central bank events. He points out that USD/JPY failed to rally despite mixed US data and potential Japanese policy shifts, raising questions on macro conviction. Dele warns the short-term recovery signals may prove unreliable if volatility persists. "Any slip below ¥157.05 could drive sharper selling — caution is critical for traders here," states Dele.

Mixed momentum signals as price dips below key averages

USD/JPY is trading at ¥157.27, now below its 20-day moving average (¥157.86) and 200-day moving average (¥159.15), while staying slightly above the 50-day moving average (¥157.05). This setup suggests short-term and long-term pressure from sellers, with medium-term support persisting, and the near-term range defined by resistance at ¥157.53 (Ichimoku Kijun) and support at ¥157.05. Momentum signals are mixed: Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) and Relative Strength Index (RSI) indicate a buy bias, but the Average Directional Index (ADX) and Commodity Channel Index (CCI) are neutral. Stochastic RSI is overbought, and Bull/Bear Power (BBP) shows buyers dominate intraday momentum, despite the overbought reading. The pair opened nearly flat, slipped ¥0.71 or 0.45% for the day, and is trading near session lows. Intraday volatility stands at 0.64%. The action today suggests mild pressure after the open, and momentum signals show a divergence with price slipping as some indicators remain positive.

Earlier, analysts noted that USD/JPY exhibited a bearish technical structure, with sellers controlling momentum as the Bank of Japan maintained a cautious policy stance amid persistent inflation. The current setup adds nuance by highlighting mixed momentum signals and potential for sideways movement within the ¥156.44 to ¥158.1 corridor, making a break of the ¥157.05 support or ¥157.53 resistance key for directional cues in the days ahead.
